or at least efficient use of beer waste, which will raise the cost of beer

those motherfrickers

quote:

As anyone who's ever brewed their own beer knows, the process leaves a lot of excess ... stuff. This goopy aftermath of the brewing process is known as "spent grain," and it would generally go to waste. But many brewers have developed relationships with farmers, who feed the spent grain to cows and other livestock. It's a win-win: Farmers get cost-effective feed, while brewers cut down on environmental waste and also possibly make some extra cash (or at least save cash by not having to dispose of the spent grain).

Obviously, this won't do.

Under new rules proposed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, breweries would be required to dry and package spent grain before it could be given or sold to farmers to use as feed. Both brewers and farmers are upset by the proposal, which they say would pose a big financial burden and also just generally makes no sense.

i wonder if the pro-organics and believers in natural environmental disposals will fight this or fall in line with biggov

This article is incomplete.

Why are they having to do this?

Has there been some type of horrible event that has caused the new regulation?

How does the FDA have jurisdiction over breweries?

Or, maybe the don't...they have jurisdiction over pig farms?

I don't understand the perceived danger of using the spend grain as pig food.

Have to click through:

quote:

Leftover brewing grains have been fed to livestock since the dawn of agriculture, so this is a pretty radical shift. The proposed new requirements for animal feed handling stipulate that the feed has to be dried, analyzed and packaged before being donated to farmers (the spent grains are generally given away at the end of the brewing process), at substantial expense.

LINK

Still not enough information, but this already sounds like a giant waste of time for everyone involved. But the FDA probably gets to analyze it!

I saw that but it didn't say what they needed to analyze it for.

same reason why we have to ask why they weren't pushing for gay rights like they do now, in the 80s

And Big Ag gets to sell more grain to pig farmers.

I would bet this is where the pressure is coming from, Big Ag.

It's all about control. These frickers want to use regulations to control and destroy business. That's what happens when u have unchecked bureaucracies who feel the need to constantly "do something"

Yeah that should matter, but I doubt there's a productive reason for it.

As a home brewer I will add my 2 cents. Hops are known to be bad for dogs. Could be they are bad for livestock as well, but people generally care more about the family pet than an animal bred for slaughter. This may be the result of some push for "humane" treatment.

That's my best guess. I would've loved to compost my brew waste (and grow my own hops too) but no way I risk killing one of the dogs or cats over it.

You put hops in your wort after you sparge. There is no hops in spent grain.

ETA: sorry I didn't mean to come off like a dick...this story just make me .

Derp. I assumed they were talking about the leftovers from fermentation for some reason. I'll show myself out
