Uninsured Motor Vehicle - Bodily Injury Coverage pays for damages when an insured is injured in a car accident caused by another person who either does not have any liability insurance, or has liability insurance, but whose available limits are not enough to pay your damages.

Medical Payments Coverage pays covered expenses regardless of who's at fault in an accident. Each person occupying your car is covered for up to the limit you choose.

Let's say that I have $50k/$100k uninsured bodily injury and $100k medical payments. Isn't that the same coverage and would I be double dipping? Both have $100k max coverage if there's more than one person in the vehicle, correct?

I'm just curious b/c I'm thinking it would be cheaper to carry just the $100k medical payment rather than the $50k/$100k bodily injury. Or do I have to carry the bodily injury in order to carry the medical payments?

Carry as much as you can afford.

Absolutely. 25% of the vehicles on the road are uninsured all together. And probably half of the rest that do have insurance have only state minimum. If you are in a serious accident with one your only hope of adequate compensation is U/M coverage.

You don't need it as long as you don't plan on being hit by an uninsured driver.

You don't need to but will you want to pay those amounts out of your pocket if you are in an accident and don't have them?

No offense, but I don't understand why people skimp on their insurance coverages. I see it all the time where people call their insurance company screaming "what do you mean I don't have that coverage" when you clearly didn't want to shell out the extra cash to cover yourself properly.

Uninsured bodily injury covers you if you get in an accident with someone uninsure/underinsured. Medical Payments extends to passengers in your car it seems.

How's your health insurance?

It'll cover gaps in your health insurance and deductibles. Also covers lost wages, and pain and suffering.

If you have a solid health insurance plan and don't plan to seek punitive damages from an uninsured driver you may not want to. I have a great health plan and carry the minimum UM coverage.

That goes for home, auto, health, and life.

Evidently State Farm does. I'm altering my policy and it's the highest medical payment coverage that's offered

$1000 or $5000 is all I've ever seen. You're in LA?

I have the highest coverage available for uninsured motorist and I'm looking at the highest coverge available for medical payments. How is that skimping?

I'm just making sure that I'm not double dipping since I'm not familiar with all of this. Not everyone sells insurance for a living and understands it completely

If you have health insurance, skip medpay.

Yes, get UM/UIM. Med pay does not pay pain and suffering or lost wages.
