It wasn’t long after he agreed to re-sign with the Saints that linebacker Ramon Humber received congratulatory phone calls from position coach Joe Vitt, special teams boss Greg McMahon and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

Humber appreciated all of them, but Ryan’s perhaps fired him up the most.

“He told me he was excited to have me back, and he said I’m a good player on defense,” Humber said. “He said, ‘I’ve got stuff planned for the future, and you’re a part of it. Get ready for it!’”

One of Humber's strengths is pass coverage, so we might see some more snaps out of him this year. He doesn't have good size, but he's continued to develop, and had a very good pre-season last year, taking some first team snaps against the Chiefs.

One of his strengths is the possession of lumber, and his propensity to bring said lumber.

I wouldn't mind this at all. It may make Hawthorne a pretty expensive back up, but we need some kind of pass coverage from our ILBs.

There's a lot out there about how we need depth at the LB spots, but if we re-sign Haralson, we're looking pretty good with him, Humber, and Dawson. It would be really nice if Reddick and Rufus can show something this camp. Another pass rusher at OLB some point in the draft wouldn't hurt, though.

Yeah, he has serious limitations there. He could very well be gone after this year.

I think Humber will remain more situational.

Hawthorne will still start.

I was very happy to see him back and am hoping the plan is for him to replace Hawthorne, either eventually or right away.

Hawthorne is basically the new Shanle + a little more speed. He's adequate but doesn't do anything very well and rarely makes huge plays while his poor plays stand out.

Also, check out the refs staring at the dead body Humber left on the ground.

I really like Reddick too. I'm hoping to address it in the draft as well.

At this point Reddick is almost purely a special teamer. He only got 15 snaps on defense(less than Herring).

I hope he continues to develop because he has shown flashes and is a huge special teams asset(4th most snaps behind only Herring(potentially gone), Humber, and Hill).

If we don't draft another ILB and we dump Hawthorne at some point, he could be the next Humber.

I'd like to see Humber step up more this year.

Just looking a Hawthorne's jump in salary next year, this could be his last year with the team.

Humber can play sideline to sideline. I've always wanted to see more from him. I expect to this year.

I remember asking after the game he subbed in did anyone else notice his speed thru the holes and running down the play.
I think it was more a factor in having seen almost NO speed from the ILB position game after game that made it so noticeable.

Couldn't beat out other LBs for playing time

Good in preseason games mean nothing

Saints decided to keep around anyway

May not make roster amirite?

woah.. Hawthorne played very well last year, he was terrible in 2012 but Spags, injuries, etc. give him an excuse. Shanle was smart player who was held back by physical limitations and he was average when he was good. i hated the guy late in his career because he seemed to be hurting us more than helping us.
