Can't imagine Saban dealing with this. He would likely retire rather than be forced to negotiate with players.

Here is a scenario that shows why this is a bad idea.
Football players are unionized, so the 85 scholarship players now get paid.
The 35 non scholarship players are mad. They still have to practice and workout, and be the scout teams for upcoming games. The non scholarship players band together and say "Pay us the same as the starters/scholarship players because we are just as important as the starters and scholarship players! If you don't pay us, we will walk out and you will have to use game day contributors for your scout teams"
Then the walk ons start getting paid. Now the student managers want a piece of the pie. "We wash the players uniforms and clothes, distribute and maintain their equipment, and help run practices among other things. You can not operate without us!"
The student managers are now getting paid, and the student trainers see what they did. "We tape ankles, distribute water and Gatorade, and do other essential tasks for the football program. Pay us or your players will die of dehydration at practice"
So now the student trainers are getting paid. The student video staff who films practices and games now want in. "We film all your practices and games, cut up the video and organize it all. Without us, how can you critique practices and games?"
See where this is going?

For now, the push is to unionize athletes at private schools, such as Northwestern, because the federal labor agency does not have jurisdiction over public universities.

Yeap, it's all about cause and effect, actions and consequences. Of course, the 'entitled' generation won't understand this until it hits them smack straight in the fact (and in the pocket).

Will the union call a strike and picket over playing non-union schools?
Posted on 3/26/14 at 3:08 pm to HubbaBubba
Many schools already lose money on their football programs. Can't imagine them keeping the sport with this.

Schools with small football budgets f'd.

If this takes place, and it has a domino effect around CFB, you can say good bye to everyone but the Big Boys.
Yep.

Can all scholarship students unionize?

I made a post on MSB about college basketball. The NCAA tournament is the main money making asset for the NCAA. So as the NCAA rakes in billions from the tournament, what happens when a Florida Gulf Coast or some other small budget school makes a run? Shouldn't they get a slice of that pie?

Interesting that it will impact those smaller, private schools that have been crying for more BCS attention more than the big, public schools. Right now, private schools are the only ones affected. Majority of those players wouldn't get to attend those private unis without football.

So, how much will they have to pay:
The women's golf team.
The 4th string defensive tackle.
The 3rd string offensive lineman.
The No. 8 tennis player.
This is gonna be a huge win for lawyers.

NLRB doesn't have jurisdiction over public universities, so for now, no. Only private school athletes. And all kids on a them are exposed to potential injury so they will be able to unionize, as well. Completely changes everything.
Posted on 3/26/14 at 3:15 pm to LSUGrrrl
Why does this only effect private universities?

At TCU I wasn't even that good of a scout team player, I was average. My asset to the team was my GPA that pulled up the team average and being the smart guy in the room that knew the playbook really well so I could help the coaches teach the new players the playbook.
But in reality that's not worth much, probably nothing at all really.
What about the walk on scout team player that beasts and makes the starters better?

If this upheld and applied with title 9.. College athletics is in danger of being destroyed.. How they could reconcile title nine will be interesting to say the least

As a former walk on at TCU this is retarded.
Why does it make it "retarded" just because you walked on at TCU?
