I am going to start paying my own auto insurance. I am a 24 full time graduate student. I was looking at GEICO and got a quote for $42 a month. But I am not really sure what I am looking at. I want to make sure I am getting what I need. The policy looks like this

Would this be enough for insurance? Would I be underinsured? I am not totally sure what I am looking at.

FYI - Drive 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac (>$10,000 value)
-no tickets
-no wrecks
-Need insurance ASAP to renew registration before next week (FML)

any help at all I would greatly appreciate

ETA: any issues with GEICO or horror stories?

Where is the $42 quote? From what I see it looks like you'll be paying around $200 a month for the prices quoted there.

Those numbers you are seeing on the far right are for 6 month policy. Take those numbers and /6.

I'm not sure what the minimums are in La (I'm assuming that's where you are?) but someone else can probably tell you what you need over there.

As far as GEICO goes, I had State Farm for a very long time and had every discount imaginable. I did the "take 15 mins" crap one day and was totally floored. GEICO saved me a lot more than 15%. It was closer to 50% and I jumped immediately. If you go with them you'll be covered instantly and can print your insurance cards from their site.

I haven't had to use them (knock on wood) for any accidents or anything, so I can't speak to that aspect. But, as far as signing up and pricing I can't say enough good things about them.

We have GMAC and those frickers have been bumping our premiums up about 20% every 6 months. Their excuse was that Louisiana Insurance rates keep increasing and that all companies are increasing their premiums. When we started with them 3 years ago we were paying about $150/month for 2 vehicles. We got our renewal last week and it had increased to almost $270/month. So I called them and they gave me this BS about rates increasing that much for all companies. I decided to call around and I got quotes from some of the more reputable companies for around $200/month (All State, State Farm, etc.). Geico quoted me $120/month for the same coverages. I'm not sure what to think

$213.97 divided by 6 = $35.66. Maybe I'm missing something. Either way, that sounds way too cheap for decent coverage for a 24 year-old male that's single. You get what you pay for.

Yeah, I thought that too when I first looked into them. But no, it's the real deal. I may change my mind if I have an accident or something and they prove me wrong, but so far so good.

All the OP (or anyone for that matter) can do is ask around, read reviews and get advice.

I've had GEICO for over 10 years and never had an issue with them.

I recently bought a new truck and my rates jumped pretty significantly forcing me to shop around. State Farm came back with better deal and I decided to jump. One call to the GEICO retention department resulted in more coverage than SF was offering for less than I was initially paying GEICO on my old truck. They didn't want to lose a long time customer with a good history.

Then I assume you never made a claim to them for an accident? That is when you really find out how good of an insurance policy you have.

You can call them and tell them give you a quote for state minimums, then you can add what you want from there...they'll email you the quote so you can look it over and you'll know it's at least everything you need
