I did my first (and probably last) one last month. I am not a professional photographer. I do it for relaxation and hobby. I have decent equipment (~$6000 total). A friend of mine that sees my images on FB asked me to do her daughter's wedding. I first told her no, telling her I am a street/landscape photographer and that a wedding photographer is a completely different animal.

She talks me into it but it tell her I will not guarantee a single image (I did it for free).

My shots came out pretty nice. A layman would think they are super, but I know and see the flaws.

That was work and I know why photographers charge $2500+ a wedding.

I've shot a few. You and I are in the exact same boat.

I only do it for friends (or as a 2nd photographer). I only do it for free. By doing it for free, there is no expectation of "professional" quality.

I usually feel like I got hit by a truck the next morning.

Takes a couple weeks to sort, select, and edit the usually more than 1000 photos I take.

Even though it's kind of a pain, I'm happy to do it for friends, because I do "ok", and they can spend their money elsewhere.

The wedding package we got for our beach wedding already included a photographer...but not for our reception.

Friend of ours is an amateur photographer and did our reception as a gift to us. I figured it wouldn't be that big a deal since receptions are more candid shots anyways.

He did a decent job but I'm glad he didn't do our entire wedding

Your friend shouldn't have pressured you to do her daughter's wedding tbh. Kinda rude on her part imo. Our friend offered to do ours, we never asked him.

If she let you off without any compensation at all she's not cool at all. How about lunch or a gift certificate at least?

I get to the rehearsal and find out the wedding is out side at 7pm in Febraury, with no lights except one light in the gazebo. I tell her right then that I cannot do it unless I can bring my studio lights. She gives me free range to do what ever I want, so I spent 1/2 th wedding blinding the people in the crowd with two large studios lights as the party walked down the aisle!!!

I've done two small weddings for friends. I hate it. Wouldn't do a big wedding that is for sure.

At the end of the reception, she said she was going to pay me, but I told her no, so she said she is going to send me something.

Wedding photography is all about the contract and refusing bad brides. Always interview before agreeing. Same for friends and family... have it in writing weeks ahead. For my wedding, I actually hired someone I knew but wasnt friends with so that I wouldnt feel guilty about holding him to the terms.
