AL.com, part of the media group that runs AL.com, Nola.com and the associated papers have started the Red Clay Readers. The first book they are discussing is the Southern gothic classic: To Kill A Mockingbird.

Screw them, we can start our own discussion.

1) Did Truman Capote write "To Kill A Mockingbid" or did Harper Lee indeed write it?

2) and/or did Harper Lee write "In Cold Blood" or did Truman Capote write it?

3) Did Harper Lee do Truman Capote, or did they just do themselves "back in the day"?

Ok, let me start by answering myself. At first I thought maybe Truman may have wrote Mockingbird, but then later in life thought Harper wrote it herself and leaned toward Harper writing at least a portion of In Cold Blood.

Have an autographed 35th edition, hopefully it will be worth some decent $ in the future.

A first edition, first print, (no autograph) even if it looks like it went through Desert Storm, is worth about 4,000 dollars. I have a 7th print, paid around 100 bucks for it.

Her John Henry is worth a lot cause she don't sign much.

First - it is not seriously disputed that they collaborated on things, even as children. Capote was the character basis for Dill in Mockingbird, and Lee helped Capote do the research for In Cold Blood.

Second - it is difficult to believe that Lee, with exactly 1 published novel, was the bigger talent than Capote, with 4 published novels, an unfinished one, non-fiction works included In Cold Blood, a musical, short stories, plays, stage plays, etc., and Harper has outlived her childhood friend for some 30 years now.

In any event, the best evidence is that Mockingbird is essentially (but perhaps not solely) Lee's work, while Capote authored the things to his credit. However, the interrelationship of each to the other's most acclaimed work (with Breakfast at Tiffany's a close second for Capote) is undeniable and the source of all this speculation.
