My grandfather passed away this past winter and he passed down this pistol to me. I feel extremely lucky an grateful he thought of me. All of the grandchildren got a firearm.

It's a S&W .357 Magnum model 66-1 with the original box.

I couldn't figure out how old it is. I'm thinkin '85-'90.

Time to get my CC

Great to get a family heirloom. Congrats.

Stocks look like aftermarket Herrets.

Best DA revolver made imo.

I've been looking for one for a little while,, just not willing to pay what they're asking right now

I can get on board with that as long as we're all in understanding that the colts are the real champions.

I think smith is starting to make the k frame magnums again. Incredibly sweet guns. It's a shame they quit making them for a while.

DA=dual action.
You don't have to cock the hammer to fire

Don't shoot too many hot 125gr magnum loads through it. They quit making that gun because people were shooting them out with hot 125gr self defense loads. It takes alot to do it, but I'd practice with .38's and mild 158gr magnum loads and use 125's for business.

That is the one of Josey's extensive arsenal he tagged with my name .Downstream transmission of such heirlooms is great. Upstream sucks.

Thanks for the advice.

Explain "shooting them out"

What kind of business? I was thinking about shooting some hogs with it.

125's are hard on guns and the smith 66 doesn't have a very strong frame for a .357 magnum. The frame stretches slightly from a bunch of hot loads and it makes the guts of the gun not fit quite right. Also, the forcing cone can crack and get jacked up.

We're talking about a whole lot of hot 125's for that stuff to happen. The gun just isn't made to swallow them constantly.

I'd use 158's for that anyway. 125's are for self defense against people and dogs. Just try to minimize practice with the magnums. Shoot them enough to sight it in and then practice with .38 specials and only occasionally shoot magnums. It'll last several lifetimes.

I'm very jealous. That's pretty widely considered to be one of if not the best carry revolver ever made, and being an heirloom makes it wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better

Know how you feel. I got one from my grandmother when I was 21. Had been my grandpa's and she had been holding on to it for me. I think of him every time I shoot it.

Beautiful gun. With the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder, that gun is at least before '82. Probably made in '70s.

I've got one that was my grandmother's, not sure where she got it, and got it when my dad passed away. I'll try to post a picture later.

You used to be able to go on S&W website and for a fee you could send info on gun and they would give you all the information of where it was purchased etc.
