Police Stingray Tech: Remember, the State Protects Your Privacy

Governments refuse to disclose details about privacy-invading technology
quote:
Police across the country may be intercepting phone calls or text messages to find suspects using a technology tool known as Stingray. But they're refusing to turn over details about its use or heavily censoring files when they do.
Police say Stingray, a suitcase-size device that pretends it's a cell tower, is useful for catching criminals, but that's about all they'll say.
For example, they won't disclose details about contracts with the device's manufacturer, Harris Corp., insisting they are protecting both police tactics and commercial secrets. The secrecy - at times imposed by nondisclosure agreements signed by police - is pitting obligations under private contracts against government transparency laws.

The level of "secrecy" that Gov keeps on and FROM its citizens is disturbing.
It should be an extremely difficult thing to keep ANY info "secret" from the people.
Certainly, I recognize that there really are legitimate reasons...but, it should require a tremendous effort to make that case.

Wonder how they limit the frequency to just calls from criminals. Perhaps they view us all as potential criminals.

The word secrecy is repugnant in a free and just society

Patriot Act really let the genie out of the bottle. It's going to take a lot to get the genie back in (if possible). From the NSA to this and more.

Sounds like probably cause to me. "You could possible commit a crime so you are guilty enough to lose your rights.."

Start with the illegal dwi checkpoints, then move to these electronic issues. Protect the fourth amendment.

So I assume they will make arrests with evidence gathered pursuant to this illicit surveillance... I wonder how much hell they will give the defense counsel when information on the surveillance is requested?

The PD won't even acknowledge they have the secret suitcase device.

I agree. The whole world should know our capabilities and how to get around them!

I think it's a waste to even complain about the loss of privacy anymore. I just assume every phone call and email, as well as browsing history is sitting in some data bank somewhere.

There is no need to assume, there are laws requiring providers to keep all of this info.
