I purchased a truck from a co worker to use for work. In the truck he has 6x9 speakers on the front 2 doors and the 2 back speakers as well. He also had a 10in subwoofer in the back.

The truck does not have an amp in it, and still has the factory radio.

I want to change out the factory radio for an aftermarket. "mainly for the iPhone/aux features and bluetooth speakers (i use bluetooth while on the phone on the road)"

my question is: If i change out the radio for an aftermarket. Will I need to install an amp? If so, how many watts should I go?

An amp on aftermarket radio isn't necessary, but if you have aftermarket speakers, I would... Sounds a lot better. If you just want an added listening experience, and not trying to win competitions, you don't need too high of watts on your amp. I would get an amp though

What was he running the sub off of? Most subs will need an amp to sound decent. Some factory radios have a sub channel, but it's usually a "premium" radio.

For the four main channels, you shouldn't need an amp, especially with a decent aftermarket stereo.

If you're 15, get an amp. If you out of high school, no amp.

JL makes some really nice amps that are for your exact setup(4 speakers 1 sub). Don't know the quality of your speakers, so you might not want to drop that kind of coin.

Eta: A bunch of companies make cheaper ones. Just look for an amp with 4 channel and one dedicated sub channel. Sounds like you need a friend to help you wire it correctly though.

Should go:
Run power from battery to amp through firewall
Radio to amp(guessing you need a line level converter to make it RCA)
Amp to each speaker
Amp to sub
Find a good ground for the amp also

You do that the upper level factory systems all come with amps, don't you?

From my experience, when speakers aren't amped, the mids tend to die out before anything. With an amp, you can also select different frequencies to go to your sub and regular speakers. Called high-pass and low-pass filters

Amp will reduce the strain on the radio trying to power all those speakers and it will sound better.

You don't need anything big though. Just something to share the load.

It's kind of funny that someone can have a high powered surround sound at home, but a nice sounding car stereo is childish. Just a little strange to me that's all

Hell no. I enjoy music too much for my factory shite it ruin it. Putting equipment to get it so loud you can hear it down the street is high schoolish. Putting quality components and a sub on a nice amp for full range sound is good in my book.

As to the OP, yes, get an amp. Either one for the highs and a separate one for the sub or like has already been mentioned get one that has a four channel high/mid section and a sub channel built in. I prefer to have separate amps that are made for a specific type driver, but it sounds like you're not getting that involved with it and the combo option will likely work great for you.

Indeed. I'm 43 and still like my rock 'n roll loud, just as it was meant to be. The difference between now and when I was a kid is that I can appreciate quality components so much more that provide a stunning level of reproduction. I spend a lot of time commuting. I sure as hell want to have quality tunes to pass the time with. I'll be building quality systems in my house and home until the day I die or go deaf.
