I was doing yard work today and noticed a coon/hound dog in my neighbors yard. He was wandering around close to the street so I walked out to check if the owner was around. When I got closer, I could see it was very malnourished male dog and had a collar w/ tag. The dog was extremely skiddish and wouldnt let me close but didn't seem like it was super afraid of me or aggressive. Obviously I knew it was someones dog.
While I was out there an older neighbor came over and said that he had noticed the dog for the last 3 days just wandering around. He said he asked all the neighbors (except me) and couldnt find the owner.
I got my dog out to herd him and he hit off with my dog and via commands to my dog I got the hound in my backyard. After putting my dog in the house I fed and gave the hound water. Although seeing his ribs he was more thirsty than hungry.
I called animal control and he tried unsuccessfully to capture him so I did, by again, getting my dog out and running the hound till he tired. I was able to grab the hounds collar and then the animal control officer came in to take him away. Doing so, I think I might have broken a finger.
The collar was very worn, name of Coon or Coot or something along those lines. It had a very worn phone number and the animal control officer called 3-4 numbers it could have been before locating the owner. The owner told the officer that he lost the dog over a month ago along the Amite over 20 miles away from where I live. Animal control and the owner arranged to meet tonight.
Time for a beer and to ice down my finger. If you were the owner, you're welcome.
CSB / TL;DR

That happened with my dog. She escaped and was gone for 3 weeks. Saw ad in paper and went and got her, she was so excited. Next day she ran away again and I haven't seen her in a year. I miss Loyal.

that makes me sad. I don't know what I'd do if my dog ran away.

You did a good thing.
The dog's owner can now finish him off for good this time.

Awesome story! Good on you, man! Inspiring stuff.
I only hope by "lost" the dog's owner didn't mean "dumped." I see too many dogs and litters of puppies dumped along country roadsides. There's a special place in hell for people who leave dogs/cats on the side of the road. /rant
