How Far Would The 76ers Advance in the NCAA Tournament?

Bill Simmons' take:
quote:
Q: How far would the 2014 Sixers go in the NCAA tournament?
—At Least 50 Readers This Week
SG: That was the most popular question in a while. Philly wouldn’t get past the Sweet 16 — this is the worst NBA team I’ve ever seen. I think every 1- and 2-seed would beat them; I think Syracuse, Duke, Louisville and Michigan State would beat them; and I think Arizona and Florida would blow them out. Maybe this would be a good NBA lottery wrinkle: Every NBA team that can’t win 20 games has to play the NCAA champ in a 40-minute game. If they can’t beat the college team, they can’t get a top-three pick

They'd stomp just about everyone.

People are real quick to toss out the "a college team could never beat a pro team" line as emphatically as possible.
Do this. First look at the 76ers lineup. Then holler back. Simmons is 100% right.

If they still had Spencer Hawes and Evan Turner this wouldn't even be a question, but now I am not so sure. If Nerlens Noel was healthy they would be just fine.
Not many college players would be able to handle Thaddeus Young all that well. Jarvis Vernardo was an extremely good college player. MCW would probably be the best PG in the tournament.
I don't see a college team beating them in a 7 game series, but someone could possibly beat them in a 1 game scenario.

They still have Thad Young and MCW. Not to mention guys like James Anderson and Tony Wroten were pretty damn good in college. The amount of talent they have on the roster is still better than any college team out there.

Basketball is one of the flukiest pro sports though too. Less talented guys and teams win all the time.
The Sixers would be able to do just fine though in the tournament.

Thad Young would average 30 & 20 and they would win it all but it is pretty crazy that there is a chance a college team could keep it to single digits

On paper the 76ers would win every game without much trouble.
In practice their talent is bad enough and basketball is streaky enough that they might not go all the way.
Anyone thinking they wouldn't be the heavy favorite is wrong though.

this changes how they play and how their opponents play... Philly might be favored in 5 of their 82 games on the season, but they'd be 20 point favorites over every college team. meanwhile you're giving every college team motivation, even the ones who've gone through the season never being the underdog

It's going to be really interesting to see if they can actually win another game. Here's their remaining schedule and only the Detroit and Boston games even seem worthy of being a tossup. If the Heat can't win the 1 seed going into that game they may just play some scrubs.

Who would win this 76ers team vs the post trade deadline tank-mode Miami team that had Chris Quinn playing 40 minutes a night with no backup PG

Pretty much this. They'd be the favorites to win the tournament for sure, but they aren't good enough to where some pretty good college team couldn't randomly knock them off on a bad day.

quote:So a team with 12 guys good enough to play in the NBA is going to get blown out by a Florida team with a very small handful of guys who may be good enough to play in the NBA?
and I think Arizona and Florida would blow them out.

these questions are always so stupid. they would blow out everybody they played.

Lulz.
There's always the chance they wouldn't be up for a game and get beat (a la MLB teams playing college teams in spring training) but they would probably destroy most of the teams they played.
