That could mean Weeden is your favorite — as of now — to be the Cowboys' Week 1 starter, circa September 2015. Current Cowboys backup Kyle Orton reportedly has wavered on his decision to come back next season, so that puts Weeden in play to be Romo's backup this season and at least in consideration to start if he does well and Romo is gone. Think about that a minute.

Yes, the Cowboys are mired in a cesspool of bad vibes these days, having shuttled off their entire defensive line and left themselves in a financial vice grip, which has only gotten worse with owner Jerry Jones doling out bad contracts over the years and now having to kick the can down the road even more.

You think the Cowboys' cap situation has been bad this year, leaving them unable to sign much incoming talent? Wait until next year

Romo counts $27.7 million against next year's cap

Things will get bad enough where Jerry will hire a new GM after he fires himself for being Al Davis reincarnate.

I can't form an opinion until PeeJ weighs in.

Romo would cost the Cowboys 29.9 million against the cap next year if they release him. So this won't be Romo's last year in Dallas. No point in releasing an experienced 34 year old QB to take a cap hit to start an inexperienced 31 year old QB. Hell, the Cowboys can't save money by cutting Romo until 2017.

Over the Cap tracks the cap space of the NFL teams and it shows the Cowboys with approx. 28 million free for 2015.

Now will Weeden be the backup this year? I think he has a decent chance. If he looks good at OTAs and Orton doesn't want to come back, a june 1st (or later) release of Orton saves the Cowboys 3+ million against the cap this year.

If his spine is severed or his neck gets broken, it will be.

Doug Free better step up this year looking at his $11m cap number in 2015.

They'll restructure. There's no way they'll release or trade Romo.
