I have some bushes starting to grow into my driveway that are about 12' tall that I need to cut back. Are there any good electric (corded) hedge trimmer options? The top brands at home depot seem to be black & decker and Toro. Or is an electric hedge trimmer not what I want? Is gas better? Battery?

Just bought the house a few months ago. Trying to build up my tool inventory.

I have one of the cheaper ones from Home Depot...don't remember the brand. They work fine but the size of limbs that they will cut is more limited than most gas models. If the gaps on the electric are bigger than what you intend to cut, it should be sufficient.

Ryobi 40v hedgetrimmers are pretty good. The battery goes forever.

All i have is a cheap Black and Decker corded hedge trimmer. I think it was either the cheapest option or second cheapest when i bought it 10+ years ago. It gets used once or twice a year and has always done everything I wanted. Stay within the limits of the machine and you will be fine - wich is to say trimming hedges and small limbed plants. If you have to cut larger diameter limbs, you probably need to look elsewhere

I wouldn't recommend a corded trimmer. I had one and I went through a handful of extension cords before I bought a gas one.

I've got a gas trimmer but it tries to die when i do the fronts of the hedges (run vertically). I've thought about selling it and going electric/rechargeable.

A story: the summer i turned 16, i worked for a yard crew in Houston to make money for my first car. my first stop every morning was a certain street where a large number of Mexican-Americans hung out in the morning looking for work. i'd try to pick up the same two every morning.

one day, jose and manuel weren't there so i got another jose and jojo (pronounced yo-yo). jo-jo cut his finger off with the hedge trimmers. i drove him and jose to the nearest payphone and called my boss to ask him what to do. he told me to take him to the nearest hospital and call him when i got there.

jose and jo-jo went into the waiting room to sign in and i called my boss again.

boss: where are you?
me: at the hospital!
boss: where at the hospital?
me: outside by the payphones.
boss: well then, leave.
me: what?
boss: get the frick out of there!

so i did. my boss told me to go to this other street to pick up workers for the rest of the summer.

I have spike of cords in my shed that I've cut with mine. It's a helluva rush to cut 120v cord while pulling 10 amps through it. Each time I swear my heart's going to stop. I guess they're double insulated since it never happens.

really depends on what you have to do with the machine...

I have an electric that works very well...the cord is a pain in the arse and I typically cut one cord per trimming...I don't think there is a lot of difference between the major brands, and as long as you don't try to cut stuff that is too big, you will be good....remember though, that you will be limited as to how far you can go with reasonable extension cords...

I'd say if you are talking about less than 75 feet of cord, go with electric...more, go with gas....

I bought an electric black and Decker from Home Depot Saturday and it did fine on my yard. No complaints but didn't do much with it either.

Two pairs of stihl gas hedge trimmers. One is 30" the other is the extendable reach. Cut through damn near anything. Go gas if you can. Corded work well just a pain dragging extension cord all around and worrying about cutting it in half.

Give it a proper tune-up. Don't be a wimp.

I trimmed 4 bushes with mine and 3 tress that shouldn't have been trimmed but fit in the teeth. Why does a homeowner like me need either of the gas trimmers you listed?

Seriously, it's a hedge trimmer. You're gonna use it, what, once or twice a year. Are you gonna sculpt the hedges into shapes or figures?

Buy the cheap electric ones at Home Depot for $30 - $40. As infrequently as you will use it, you may not have to buy another one for many years.

Put your money into something you will use more often and where differences in products will matter more.

Should have been more specific, that is what I have. Stihl makes a homeowner line of gas hedge trimmers as well. Like I said they are easier to maneuver around without the worry of dragging electrical cords around and cutting through them.
