Is there any reason not to file a homeowner's claim for hail damage to a roof?

23 years a homeowner, never a claim. I'm told it's a pretty substantial expense.

What's the repercussions of filing?

I know we've got one or two experts in this field...

No reason not to file if you have damage, don't file a claim before you have a respected roofer look at the home and confirm you have damage that would warrant roof replacement.

Then no reason not to, did the roofer see soft metal damage on the roof? Do you have a patio cover or something similar showing hail damage also? It is always good to have collateral damage for hail...

Your insurance company will assign you an adjuster, if you believe you have hail damage, have your contractor meet the adjuster for the inspection. Don't go with the lowest quote, you will get two checks, the first check will be appx half the amount, the second check ( recoverable depreciation ) will be for the contractors invoice, minus the first check and your deductible. So the lower the quote the more the insurance company saves, not you. That's why they want you to get three quotes and go with lowest, but that's not required. Get a hand nailed roof system if you can, and make sure your contractor is licensed. I do it everyday.

If the adjuster decides the roof warrants replacement, the roofer will work for insurance proceeds plus the deductible. Take price out the equation and hire the best roofer.

Many times the homeowner believes that if they get a quote $2,000 cheaper than the adjusters estimate, that they will pocket the remaining money, therefore going with the lowest quote. It doesn't work like that, the insurance company saves that $2,000. Many times that's the difference in getting new heater vents etc. versus the low guy having to cut corners and just paint them. So don't go low and risk a shoddy job to save the insurance co. money, they are paying for it, get what you should.

Also if you have a 2 story or steep roof, make sure you are getting paid a steep charge, and drip edge etc, adjusters leave things off sometimes

Thanks for the advice, guys. Sounds pretty much like what this particular roofer said.

He asked to be there when the adjuster looks at it so he can make sure he covers everything.

I don't have a patio cover, and not sure of any soft metal damage. My roof is too steep for me to go up on... never will I be on my roof.

I went up there on my last house and knew I'd never do that again...

Hey wick,

With vehicles, long time ago I wrecked truck. My dad told me to get two estimates and go have it fixed- not even wait for adjuster cause they may say, "fix this, not that.."

I did and adjuster wasn't happy but didn't balk either. Dad was an atty and is no longer here but I was wondering if that would still float today?

I have always been a little scared to file a homeowners claim...but frankly, unless your house burns down, hail damage is really the only way you will ever recoup any of your payments...

I do property, no idea on vehicles and the answer will most probably change state to state and policy to policy...

I had inside roof damage from a leak around my fireplace.

I called the insurance adjuster and he came out decided my entire roof needed replacing from hail damage.

I called the roofer in my area with the best references, reputation.

They checked out the damage and then did it for the estimate the adjuster originally quoted.

Since I don't have time to go through the hassle of getting several quotes and whatnot I went with them.

Took them 1 day and now I have a new roof and inside water damage finished and I'm out $0.

I have Farm Bureau and had hail damage on an 18yo roof. The adjuster came out, looked at the roof and I got a check for $7,500. I had zero problems.

Bring a vehicle to wherever you want it fixed. Insurance will have to pay wherever.
