Disclaimer: I'm by no means a food snob or even a particularly great cook.

I like to support local grocers like Bet-R and Calandros, but even for my fairly elementary cooking, their meats just aren't cutting it. I'm not picky, but ground beef that turns brown literally the day after I purchase it just isn't going to do it for me.

What are my options here? Whole Foods?

Try Maxwell's, Tramonte's or Chris's Specialty Meats.

Meat turns red once, when exposed to oxygen and then browns. If all your ground meats are turning quick (this does not mean that they are bad) then it might be your food handling or the temp in your refrigerator...

Thanks. Again, I'm an amateur at best.

If the problem is on my end, how can I combat it? It's not just the color of the meat that troubles me, but the smell too.

OK? It's actually a decent little store. Pretty good beer selection, or better than you'd think.

You probably should give him some pointers on the St. Patricks parade route as well.

I have started buying all the meat my wife and I eat at the farmer's market on Saturday. I do not feel like their prices are too far above Whole Foods/Calvins if at all which is where I was getting them before. And I know exactly where they are coming from, but beyond that they are fantastic.

Iverstine Farms for pork, yard bird farms (when they are there) for chicken, and Cutrer's for beef

Now we're talkin'. I may just have to start making it a routine to head down to the farmer's market. You're referring to the one downtown, I presume.

Probably so. I've never been to the big one downtown on Saturddays, but the small one on Thursday mornings at Pennington doesn't have too much in the way of meat.

Oh, and as wickowick suggested, check the temperature of your fridge if your meat is starting to turn too quickly.

Yes, but they also have one on Thursday's at Pennington, but I feel having a farmer's market on a weekday from 8-12 just caters to old people and soccer moms (not that there is anything wrong with that).

While I haven't really minded the prices, I wasn't sure if everyone wouldn't mind; so here is a link to the Cutrer's price list Beef Prices
They have a good amount of that list at the market but for specialty cuts you can order them and they can bring that to the market
