I just renewed my CCW (1 year) and driver's license (5 year) in Alabama back in January

I'm moving to Mississippi next month and my car tag expires on the 31st.

I guess the right thing to do would be to wait until I move and just renew in MS, but I'm thinking I'd need a MS license to do that which in turn would render my CCW useless.

As it is Alabama and MS reciprocate so my CCW would be good over there until it expires. No brainer right? Just renew my car tag in Alabama since i've already paid for the new license and CCW permit and worry about transferring all this stuff over next year?

What would you do?

when it comes to the CCW, renew/update immediately. You don't want to find yourself explaining loopholes should you have to use your weapon.

Step one, if not already done buy a life time hunting fishing license in Alabama

Step 2, establish residency in Mississippi to start the clock it takes being a resident there for 18 months to purchase a resident lifetime license, get it ASAP

As far as your original question, suck it up and go ahead and start the process and get everything switched over, you will have to pretty soon anyway and it is the law, be aware you will probably have to end up paying sales tax on your truck to Mississippi when you get your tag

I thought the 18 month thresh hold was for first time permit holder, and if you had a permit in a reciprocating state you were eligible right away?

Step 1. Stop asking anonymous people for legal advice.

Step 2. Call a lawyer who is licensed in the relevant jurisdiction.

Given the traffic on this site, my hope was that either

1) someone has one through this before
2) there's a lawyer present on the OB

I'm a lawyer, but I don't give legal advice on a message board, and I can't think of any attorney who would do the same.

I am sorry I was referring to a lifetime hunting fishing license

I took it as him not really asking legal advice, as he really already knows the "right" thing to do, but was more asking what would you do in the same scenario

eh, you probably wouldn't expect to see a judge passing judgment on a message board before hearing a case either, but...well...you know

And yea, I wasn't really seeking legal advice particularly, just trying to save a few bucks because my up front expenses associated with this move are going to be killer. And I hate the fact that I'm going to have to pay for things I just got renewed for a year. I mean, I know people that live somewhere and have a car tag that notates they live elsewhere, I was merely posing a what would you do question.

I think you can get a refund on unused months on your car tag. When we sold my wife's truck last year I was at the courthouse to get a new tag and there was a form to fill out and you had to show the bill of sale to them that you no longer owned it. Refund check came in the mail a few weeks later. Check and see if you can do the same moving to another state. I would think a copy of your tag registration with the same VIN would be proof enough if you can do this. Just look around your county's website and see what you can find.

In our case it was about 4 months of the tag fees we got back. We renew in January and sold the truck in early September.

My tag is what's due for renewal. It expires on the 31st. It's my driver's license and carry permit that I just renewed, that'll I'll have to renew again and pay more for if I wait untl I move to get a new tag. Would need a MS license to get an MS car tag, and a CCW license in MS is pretty damn expensive.

ETA: damn that was gibberish.
Cliffs: Have bama carry permit, bama license, just renewed both, bout to move to MS, car tag bout to expire

Yeah. I was just saying if you renew the tag in Alabama then you can probably get a refund when you register it in MS.
