Dallas Seavey wins his second Iditarod

This probably belongs on the OB more than anywhere.
It's a kickass race, this year the conditions were brutal. Lack of snow on some parts the trail caused quite a few to scratch.
Dallas is a hell of an outdoorsman in addition to being a great racer. Some of you may have seen "Ultimate Survival Alaska" where he's competed the past two seasons.
I spent a year as a handler for Bob Morgan's team back in the early '00's.

Seavey ran a blistering pace to rally from third place and win his second Iditarod early Tuesday in a record-breaking finish. The twist ending to the 1,000-mile long competition came after a sudden storm blew front-runner Jeff King out of the competition.
The victory was so strange that Seavey said he didn't even realize he won the race until about 90 seconds after he crossed the finish line.
quote:
He thought he was "racing my dad for third," he said. But the trailing musher he thought was his father, defending champion Mitch Seavey, was actually Zirkle, and they were battling for first place.
Only Zirkle knew it, though.
"Sure, yeah, hindsight, blah, blah, blah ... second's pretty good," Zirkle said about her third consecutive runner-up spot.
"I'm sure I'm going to be bummed," an exhausted Zirkle told fans who mobbed her in the city's convention center, where top mushers traditionally meet with fans immediately after coming off the trail.

She's pretty amazing. A couple of women have won. Susan Butcher who also has won took a dog sled team up Mt. McKinley for the first dog team ascent.

awesome show. i believe some of the falls in the water are scripted (have to be) but it is a great show nonetheless

His team won, amazingly. I liked the way the show put together teams instead of the way it was done the first season.

Yeah, they shot some of that locally. My company did some of the logitics work for a production company working for NatGeo a few years ago. Didn't realize this is what they were scouting.

That show is pretty tight, even though half of the timing situations are embellished. One of my favorite shows

The second season was far better than the first. The first was pretty amateurish, but the second was much more realistic.
The last episode of the first season was shot on some peaks behind town and you can actually see the peak they were supposed to reach from the house. It wasn't really that far out there.
Second season they put them in some better locations, some real wilderness places.

Yeah, it is a great show. I'm sure some of it is put on for TV, but that bear charging that red headed guy on Kodiak Island was real. I'm sure he had to change his underwear.

I'm just glad they got Marty to shut the hell up on the last few episodes. Seemed like it took a tole on him

He was way better in season 2.

It's real, but the production crew does get them to do some stunts. The bear thing would have freaked me out and I'm pretty used to bears.

He's actually a pretty cool guy. He used to frequent the same bar in Wasilla we went to. He needs a good crew to keep him moving though, he's getting a bit old and out of shape for some of that stuff.
I remember when they were looking for people for that show, I think I posted something about it on the OB. I recommended someone but they didn't get the gig.

when they had the military/mountaineers teams rap down that waterfall was stupid. I kept wondering why didn't they just go down the rocky area that was adjacent to the falls.

Yeah, saw that. WTF?
Packrafting down that glacial stream looked fun though

No idea, was so unsafe though. One thing if they backed up their hand brake but they didn't.
I mean seriously, there was a nice spot to come down just next to the fall. All that talk about hypothermia made that even dumber.
It did but made me just as nervous Kept wondering if they'd be able to stop once it was descending into the glacier.

The Seaveys were a tough pair on first season of the show. Didn't watch second season yet.
I want a packraft after watching.

I will be getting one eventually. I'd like to pack up river and raft back down to my car.
Fishing/camping along the way of course.
