Yes...this guy was definitely distracted. But, WTH? Why would a reasonable defensive driver continue at this speed and veer INTO the path of the other vehicle!?!?!?!

Am I the only one who finds that the guy who was paying attention did an absolutely shitty job of avoiding this crash, eh (noted for those Canadian TDers)?

Looked like he was gonna try to drive around the left when the guy first started to pull out, like the guy might have noticed and stopped with his front end in the roadway. As for slowing down, I couldn't say without driving on that road but the last thing you want to do is risk spinning out. I'd rather hit someone than get hit.

Don't know there was much he could have done there. Looks like he went to go around them, saw it wasn't going to happen and then missed the driver. Actually think that was a decent job of driving considering.

Sounds like an idiot talking about not even looking out of his windshield while he was turning. Every time you turn, you're using the windows on your doors to turn.

My instincts would be to slow down and take that area behind the truck. It was wide open. Plus...I'd rather hit a trailer than a truck any day. The dude pulling out was completely clueless and distracted.

No but you would be wrong. He was on the brakes and on the brakes very hard. Dash cameras don't clearly show/portray the extreme deceleration rate under full braking. You can hear his tires squealing under 100% brakes (and ABS).

If you watch videos of actual racing with deceleration rates of 1.5g or more then you will notice that it doesn't look like that much deceleration either.

He did a great job (unintentionally) of hitting the truck bed. He could have hit the trailer which would have been great if he wanted to launch projectiles into his own vehicle. He could have hit the truck door which would have injured the other vehicles passengers much more. He could have unsuccessfully swerved to the right and off of the road into the snow. There was absolutely no place to go.

In the general area of the salt/crap in the road? Braking doesn't work so well on gravel/salt/rocks.

Cars are designed to give/receive a hit. Trailers are not.
