Why do employers do this? Are they just reaffirming what they already know or are they trying to narrow down the field more?

Are there any "typical" questions the employer will ask on follow ups?

Follow ups usually allow for other employees to meet and assess the candidate.

This.

And they go into much more detail about specifics of what the job entails than the initial interview.

I've typically experienced that upper management sits in and sizes up the choice of the hiring manager in the follow up interview.

Sometimes the upper management sits in on the initial. Halliburton uses the 2nd interview to have the actual job choices tour their facility and meet their coworkers.

I'm not disagreeing with you but, I interviewed with the CFO and I spoke with the CEO when I walked in the building for the interview.

I'm thinking of how I'm going to prepare... Read up on their website more and try to get an idea of the questions they'll ask.

Find them on LinkedIn if you can. See if they are linking articles or participating in any groups. Look up their bios on the company website if available and see if you can glean anything.

Not really providing a lot of specific context based on what you're trying to obtain with the OP from over this way, brah...

The future coworkers get a vote, too, in case they pick up on something subtle or don't think the candidate would be a good cultural fit. Also, by getting a chance to weigh in they can't complain later.
