1. Beaver Anal Secretions
WikiMedia:
Listed under "ingredients" as: Castoreum

How we consume it: Vanilla-flavored treats

Even if castoreum, a liquid found in castor sacs near a beaver's anus, might not SOUND tasty, it is widely used as a substitute for vanilla flavoring.

I knew there was a reason I didn't like vanilla anything!

Either snopes or one of those odd food shows on the discovery channel is wrong. We watched a show about scientists coming up with new flavoring a few months ago and the beaver anus was mentioned. This sticks in my mind because I tore the fridge apart making sure that nothing in there contained it.

They don't have to list it... Can say "Natural Flavorings"

Well, the show is trying to be interesting, so a factoid about beaver arse drippings is going to be a helluva lot catchier than 4-ethylphenol and 1,2-dihydroxybenzene (just a couple of the many compounds found in the arse juice). The snopes article points out the worldwide industrial consumption of castoreum is less than 300 pounds per year. That leaves very little chance that anyone is consuming castoreum.
