Dad is getting me two days of classes in the dirty dell for my bday, and I wanted to know what to expect. Am I gonna look like an idiot? I can shoot better than most people, but haven't done any training before.

All he has told me is that he is level 3 or something, cops suck at shooting, and it is intense.

Courses will be "Intro to Tactical Pistol" and "Tactical Pistol 1", and they get progressively harder as you go up

You wont look like an idiot at all.

Ive taken a few of their classes.

Greg and Destin and whoever teaches the classes are very professional and very good trainers. They will let you work at your own pace if you are slow and they will speed you up if you are fast.

More than likely there will be beginners and experts all in one class. Use whatever you will carry on a normal basis. Dont try to go out there with a plate carrier and kevlar if that is not how you carry.

Tips:
Electronic ear pro
Dump all your ammo in an ammo box
Get a mag loader from academy(LULA or something)

Im sure Ill think of more later.

Don't have an IWB holster, just an OWB SERPA(basically). Still waiting on my CC to come in. I've gotta spend $40 for another mag too

Serpa= I never believed the videos about all the training accidents with that holster until my wife bought one. With an unloaded pistol I tried over and over getting the gun out as fast as possible and like half of those times I would have a hole in my leg if the pistol had been loaded. Those holsters are nightmares waiting to happen.

How many do you have? I dont think Ive ever taken a class with less than 6. You can certainly do it, however in the future if you want to take more classes, get more mags. Most instructors are available and open to talking during breaks, easy chance to get them to show you other stuff or just help you out. Cant really do that with only 1 or 2 mags because youll be loading during those breaks.

What pistol are you bringing?

Get rid of the serpa, it's no good. Gets gummed up with mud/sand/other stuff, and not to mention the training accidents

Any time you speak of retention holsters - Mandatory Tex video
TEX

It's actually NOT a Serpa holster in this video. I think it was a Safari retention holster....

It is actually an IMI Defense holster. I don't have problems with SERPA holsters. My trigger finger always comes out on the slide. I have to specifically try to get the gun to come out with my finger inside the trigger guard.

Eta: Maybe it has something to do with the angle I carry it, but I dunno

I have the 2 mags that came with my PPQ-M2. They are pretty pricey, so I have held off getting another one

I carried mine(for a G20) in the woods every day for a year and a half and never had anything close to a problem with it. There aren't many other tougher situations than that I can think of. Still works as new despite having tree paint all over it

A lot of classes don't allow the use of serpas.

Also Greg and destin are top notch however I don't really care for their adjunct instructors. Last I checked both destin and Greg were over seas. Check with advantage group, they are in Hammond.

That was a Blackhawk Serpa that ole Tex was using.

For hunting//woods carry, I wouldn't hesitate to use one. For training classes, or CCW or competition -- no way I'd use one.

Something about the way I draw must put my finger directly on the slide every time.

I'm just guessing, but like I said earlier, it could be the angle I carry, or the pressure points I use when drawing, who knows, but my finger comes out in the same place every time
