I understand the "his weakness let Putin invade argument," but at this point is there an action he should pursue that he isn't OR actions that he should not pursue that he is. (Wow, that was wordy).
In short, what should Obama being doing different about the Ukrainian/Russian situation?

Maybe Kerry can come up with another strongly worded statement.

Yes, he should issue a live statement saying the US will now open all natural gas fields in America for production and no longer buy it from Russia because if their aggression.
we have plenty to sustain ourselves for more than a century (easily)
Putin would immediately pick up his toys and go home.
Why in the frick would we buy one of our greatest natural resources from Russia? it's all they have and it would crush them

Because Biden would be so much better?
Put aside dislike for Obama, if you were in his seat, what would you do different.
I hope no one here supports military action against Russia over Crimea.

This should happen regardless....

Since Putin insists the forces in Crimea arent under Russian command, that they are local militas, i think Obama should call his bluff.
Say, "OK. Ukraine has asked for NATO assistance in liberating their bases from militia seige, so we're send support to that end."
Then watch Putin shite his pants.
If they arent Russian, theres no real risk of warm right?
call his bluff.

This is the part of Putin's argument I don't understand. With all the questions being asked about the "invasion", I have not heard one person ask "well if it's not the Russian army per say, then who gave the order to send in the local militias?

I don't not think that he shouldn't pursue non actions that he isn't.
I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself.

I think there are both: pro-russian militias and the regular Russian army.
Putin has disavowed the militias. However, imho, he is probably supporting them under the table. Much as we probably supported pro-western democracy groups in Ukraine.

He should have never made threats or drawn red lines. He castrated himself in the past.

He shouldn't have missed the first NSC meeting.
Other than that, I could nitpick, parse words, etc.; however, there's no way he could reverse this thing in a week.

He should wade into shark infested waters.

He should do at least these two things imho. First he should make sure Putin takes a "prestige" hit on this. He should use his vast powers to ensure that Putin OWNS this and is portrayed as the Ruthless, half-cocked, reckless cowboy that he is. Putin need a loss of face here.Call in all your International favors with various media-types and barrage this guy with negativity. Pretend he's a Republican.
Second he should TAKE SOMETHING OF VALUE FROM PUTIN. He should punish him by depriving him of something he has or something he covets. Others have made various suggestions on this.
It's time for some high-level Realpolitik. Machiavellian behavior met with a Machiavellian response. A smile on our face but a club behind our back. A reset of relations.
Lost in this amongst my Conservative brethren is that Obama is The Good Guy *cough cough and Putin is The Bad Guy. Can we not all agree that despite our effete Frenchy-lite President's pitiful ineptness, that Putin needs to pay a price for being an Outlaw?
