As of now, he's worth it. But his cap number does go up every year from here on out, and his dead money goes down, so he'll most likely do some kind of restructure or extension in the next couple of years.

CUT PAYTON !!!!!
THIS COACH SHOULD BE ON THE HOT SEAT!!!!
HE SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT HIS JOB!!!!
Hey Benson give Sean Payton another contract extension. We need to keep this guy here to 2020. Saints what a team...... This is a 7-9 team at best. San Diego and Atlanta are going to bet the Saints next. The next team the Saints will have a chance to bet is Kansas City. By the time the Saints play them they will be 3-6 and looking for a win. What is Benson going to say when Sean Payton has another loosing season??? i just don't know why you gave this guy a contract extension early in the season. This coach should be on the hot seat. He should be worried about loosing his job this year. Please BEASON FIRE SEAN PAYTON and hire a real head football coach like Bill Cowher or Marty Schottenheimer,'' even though he hasn't won the big game he knows how to call plays and coach." Sean Payton first year was a fluke. This guy is worse than Jim Haslet.... But I know Benson, you will probably give him another contract extension. Please listen Benson this guy is no football genius. Once again his first year was a fluke. He is not a head football coach!!! We have one of the most talented offense in the league, not a real bad defense. Payton is a really really poor play caller. This team will be nothing more than a 7-9 football team when you have a coach that calls plays the way Sean Payton does. Please let this guy go..... and hire a real head football coach like Bill Cowher or Marty Schottenheimer while we still have such a talented football team. You can only say it's the player for so long..... We have real good players on offense and defense, we just have the wrong guy calling the plays and leading the team.

best argument to pay a premium:

top offense/defense
worst ST

misses playoffs

who was that?

And we have a good indication he will be playing like this for a long time so I'm fine with this kind of pay here as long they keep it under 3 million.

There's nothing wrong with paying for security a long term solution gets you.

Chargers had the #1 O and D and missed the playoffs becuase they were ranked like dead last in ST.

exactly and that is why I am perfectly fine with paying a premium for top 5 punter/kickers.

I thought it was pretty funny that the top 2 highest paid punters for the 2014 season are brothers.

This is the stupidest fricking thing I've seen on here in a long time.

Maybe if we cut Morestead, then Payton will be forced to fire the ST coordinator.

Really think players with good legs are some of the smartest out there.

You get paid millions/yr to kick a ball. If you're really good, you can play 10-15 years say at an average 1.5-2mil/yr.

You rarely get injured, you don't have an absurdly increased risk of concussions, and you walk away in your mid-30s, early 40s millionaires and can retire on a boat somewhere fishing.

San Diego still has the same punter from that season.

32 teams in the NFL, hundreds of college kids come out every year, but punters never seem to change

He won't see the end of this contract in the current state.

Well in SD's defense, it wasn't just the punter or kicker taht season. it was overall team play

I think they gave up a 90+ yard return and had 2 punts blocked on consecutive drives or something crazy like that

I think him doing kick offs makes it worth it.
I'm definitely not trying to say he isn't worth it, just that for my taste that is a high number for any part time player at any position.

But if you are going to pay that much for a part timer, he is definitely the guy you pay.

Punters yes. Kicker no.

Go check the stats and you'll see almost every single kicker that has been top 5 one year was 15-20 in a year or two before or after and rarely do they make it back into the top 5.
