Russia's history with the Crimea Region

I see the isolationists/Ron Paulites frequently cite Russia's history and association with the Crimea as reason to leave this conflict alone. My question is where does this stop? How much land can Putin take because they used to own it? The rus people originated in kyiv and Ukraine was part of imperial Russia the ussr etc do they get to take it all? How bout Finland?
I'm not arguing to invade the Crimea, but to gloss over this invasion and disruption of sovereignty of an ally just because those people "have a history with Russia" seems short sighted.

England should conduct an uncontested arrival in the US. We have a history with them and are English speaking peoples and there is much dissatisfaction in this country with our current government.

It entertains me to see how much this board is worshiping that despot in Putin. I get the partisan politics bullshite, but find it pretty sad that we as a nation are actually jerking off over the thought of Putin getting one up over us...because we dislike the man in the oval office.

I can't stand Obama but I don't think he's completely at fault. The cancellation of the missile shield in Poland probably didn't help and neither did the response to Russia's invasion of Georgia. I think Putin fantasizes about bringing Russia back to it's 20th century glory. I believe he will continue to encroach his way into Eastern Europe.
World events don't happen in a vacuum and Foreign Policy doesn't fit into Left vs Right arguments as well as most people would like it to.
Clinton/Bush/Obama all deserve equal blame.
Western Europe deserves even more blame.
Putin deserves the lion's share of the blame for being psychopath.

He is the only one who deserves any blame. Blaming anyone else is like saying the murder victim is at fault for being at the wrong place in the wrong time.
The lack of response to his incursion into Georgia (and admittedly Georgia kinda screwed the goose there) empowered him to go into Crimea because he knows the west won't do a damn thing but talk.
Watching the jerk offs here fawn over Putin is disgusting.

It's a bit more complicated than just being a part of the old USSR. The Crimean region is home to a lot of ethnic Russians. The region is incredibly unstable with the removal of the Ukraine leadership which makes these ethnic Russians concerned about their further under new political leadership.
It's difficult for us to understand here because the US is a nation created within a political boundary whereas Europe is a host of political boundaries that surround nations of people. The rise of nationalism in Europe is an engrossing topic.

I don't think he's trying to colonize. He wants control over that area so he can continue to get natural gas out to western europe, and he needs that gulf open to do that. It's a huge financial asset to them. The only reason our Gov cares is because they realize we could benefit from Russia's loss of that asset. When Russia can't sell their natural gas to countries that belong to the EU, guess who can.

I really don't think it's complicated at all. The more I look at it the more I think Putin is just on a blatant landgrab.

And the United States is home to a lot of Anglo-Saxons. Does that mean the British should come over here and annex the part of our country which houses the most?
Should Mexico be allowed to re-annex the American southwest due to its large ethnic Mexican population?
