I tried to post a reply to the October string of posts but received a, this post is currently locked remark.

I came across an update of the Stephen Short saga in the latest Referee magazine. It said that he had been suspended for 10 days and demoted. I also found a story where he is appealing his demotion. Then another story where he is possibly in trouble again. The below paragraph is from an article about 2 weeks ago.

LINK

Covington police Sgt. Stephen Short, who earlier was suspended and demoted for his role in the controversial arrest of two football referees during an October game in Covington, has again run afoul of Chief Tim Lentz — this time allegedly for accessing the records and recordings of two phone calls Lentz made to the officials who were arrested, as well as another phone call made by a detective to a possible witness to the incident.

The article wasn't very clear so if the issue is that Short wants access to some phone recordings to help with his appeal, I don't see the problem.

If he somehow "stole" them, then obviously that's a big deal.

Either way, Short needs to think about cutting some sort of deal and retiring. It's obvious that the new chief has a hard on for him and you're going to lose that battle every time.

Maybe he just doesn't want an overzealous cop doing his own thing.

Probably. But that just proves my point. The new chief is going to be keeping on eye on/riding Short and if he doesn't get him this time will probably be waiting for him to screw up again.

In other words, he has a hard on for him and Short might want to consider other exciting career opportunities.

Why should he get access to private phone conversations?

Before his demotion in January, Short was head of the department’s internal affairs unit, which may have allowed him access to calls made from the department, Lentz said.

I guess I should have more clear in that asking for and knowing about their existence shouldn't have been a problem.

Obviously, they can always decline the request.

The investigation arose out of a request Short made to the police chief for documents and evidence to assist in his appeal of the earlier suspension; that appeal is set to be heard by the city’s police and fire civil service board in late March. In his request for evidence, Short listed the two phone calls Lentz made to the referees and the third call made by the detective, including specific dates and times. All phone calls from the Covington Police Department are logged and recorded, Lentz said.

“The issue is he is accessing the chief of police’s phone calls,” Lentz said Tuesday night.

The department has a policy prohibiting employees from accessing confidential information for personal gain, Lentz said. Before his demotion in January, Short was head of the department’s internal affairs unit, which may have allowed him access to calls made from the department, Lentz said.

If all my years of TV watching has taught me anything, it's that because this guy was head of IA, he's not going to get any help from anyone else in the dept ever.

Cops should have shot the basketball. Or football. Just shoot a ball.

This. I mean, it's not like those officials were going anywhere until after the game. That sgt just wanted publicity.

Lentz is going down because of those calls too...
He's a douche and all his officers are looking for jobs. FACT!!
Civil service is backing Short and representing him against the department. It was also in the paper.

Well, soon-to-be ex-officer Short! Welcome to the conversation!

(Disclaimer: you may also just be friend or family member. {sarcasm font} Either way, you're clearly capable of being totally objective {/sarcasm font} )

Unless he was using his position to sweep things under the rug to protect his other cop friends.

Based on the abuses of power already catalogued in this thread, this is a definite possibility.

Why would Lentz go down for investigating this?
