we would be obliged to act, right? But would NATO really do anything?

If NATO didn't want to collapse, they would. It's a mutual defense treaty. If a NATO partner isn't defended, then the whole organization is a farce.

I thought it was Ukraine itself who put the brakes on NATO membership?

Article 5 of the NATO alliance:

quote:

The key section of the treaty was Article V. This committed each member state to consider an armed attack against one state to be an armed attack against all states. This article has only been invoked once in NATO history: by the United States after the September 11 attacks.

I have been thinking the same thing. What would have happened if Ukraines was in NATO. Would that fact have stopped Putin? Or would the result be the same, ie, he knew BHO would not do anything and talk his way out of defending even a NATO partner??

Did all members contribute in Afghanistan? I don't recall.

The same President that started this whole fricking fiasco with his relations with Russia. Who just happens NOT to be a member of NATO.

Not all were members in 2001.

The majority did that were members.

If Ukraine were a member of NATO, this would not have happened.

Are you sure about that? Given the perceived weakness of the BHO administration by most of the world, would Putin maybe have still tested the NATO resolve?

Putin is a cowboy but I don't believe he would have entered a NATO country.

I highly doubt Obama would (or debatedly should) have the balls to go to war with Russia if Ukraine was in NATO.

NATO is a very dangerous thing for the US.

I think Putin is doing what he thinks he can do and get away with... by testing this Administration and its perceived weakness. Invading a NATO member and forcing other members to invoke Article 5 is something I do not think Putin would have done.

Of course, none of us can be 100% sure of anything in the world of international affairs, I think it's the sensible position to take. But it doesn't matter, considering it's a hypothetical... Ukraine is not a member of NATO, and Russian troops are always stationed in Crimea.

Putin would have gone ahead even if Ukraine was in NATO because Obama is, as they say in Communist circles, a "fellow traveler".

Putin and Obama want the same things: the destruction of America and Western Europe.

The invasion of a NATO-allied Ukraine and the subsequent lack of American response would collapse NATO, which is in both Putin and Obama's interest.

That's what's been causing all the friction between the U.S. and Russia since the end of the Coled War. We've been pushing NATO closer and sloser to Russia's doorsteps. Putin doesn't want a belligerent NATO country right next door to him.
