Is it possible to enter a formula into a cell that sums up all cells within a column that are highlighted in a certain color?

Yes... but you may need to do it in the long version.

If you can program it, you can do it in excel.

The main limitation is that I know of no way to "save or store variables.

It is just what it is in the cell now in real time

A long way around it (to which that BHP offered a far better alternative I wasn't aware of), would be to integrate the parameters of the color conditions into the IF function.

Yes but it is a huge pain in the arse. Easier way to do it in my experience is to write the formula that created the colors into your formula

Just sort by color and do them separately for the easy way. If you don't have too many colors that is.

can't do it that way. The highlighted cells are formulas. If you rearrange them then you'll lose the values.

Is there a value that makes each cell a certain color or was the color of each cell manually changed?

You could always ghetto approach it, copy values not formulas to a new sheet and do what he says. Not pretty but can get the job done. You can sum referencing those values from the other sheet
