IYO, what should the US do in response to the Russian actions in the Ukraine?

Forget what you think WILL happen given Obama being Putin's bitch (which I feel safe in saying is the overwhelming opinion on this board). What do you think the US SHOULD do, and why?

Explain why you believe your proposed approach is the best course of action for the US in the long term.

I can see both the "none of our business, stay out of it" and the "project force to maintain world order" opinions. I'm trying to form mine given long term consequences of each course of action (and any alternatives).

Well, Ted Cruz says we should kick them out of the G-8.

Thanks Zach, but that doesn't answer my question.

IMO we should put diplomatic and economically pressure on them and let them know we are serious about military intervention of they can't work it out. If crimea really wants to be Russian then let Russia and Ukraine work out a diplomatic solution.

If they haven't already, wait for Ukraine to ask for our help and then see what level of sabre rattling we need to exhibit.

Yes. It does answer your question. If kicking Russia out of the G -8 is not a 'response' what is it?

Do you think Russia is going to respond to diplomatic pressure from the US?

I'm skeptical.

I asked the same thing the other day, and nobody seemed to have a suggestion. But there was a lot of discussion about Obama being weak and soft, so you should expect a lot of that here.

What I meant was, what is your opinion...not Ted Cruz's opinion. I suppose what your saying is that you agree with him.

I'm going to drink beer and watch True Detective. Obama should keep his mouth shut unless he plans on actually doing something. Eta: I agree with kicking them out of the G-8.

Yes, because Russia is trying to remake its image (see the Sochi Olympics) and if Putin thinks Obama is serious that NATO might get involved he would back down.

Well, my response is predicated on Vlad's.

If he takes Ukraine, I'd email him and tell him thanks for ceding Cuba to us.

The difference is, I'd actually do it, not draw a bunch of red lines all over the place.

What does this mean exactly? Serious question.

I'm on board with kicking them out if the G8. Restarting our missile defense shield, maybe parking a couple of carriers in the eastern Med. and large scale military exercises in Poland or Romania just to let them know we could end this if we wanted to.
