ETA: Lifted from a thread on the O-T Lounge:

LINK
quote:

State Sen. Mack "Bodi" White, R-Central, says he is pre-filing legislation today that would create four independent school districts in East Baton Rouge Parish, one of which would be the southeast district already created by the 2013 Legislature.

As envisioned, the districts would remain under the umbrella of EBR Schools but would have their own deputy superintendents empowered to make a broad range of financial, administrative and educational decisions. The measure is intended to help reform a troubled school system and could, potentially, appease supporters of the city of St. George incorporation movement, though White says the bill is not about derailing the effort.

This is a good idea and deserves support.

Here's hoping that the "combatants" will realize this and work to obtain passage.

This is a good thing. I'm curious to what the backlash is going to be though. EBR Parish officials can't stand having their power usurped by the lesser citizenry.

And, if passage happens, would pretty much end the incorporation effort, i assume.

I don't think that's accurate, seeing as this was the SG goal anyway, and being that Bodi White was the one that introduced the new school district that spurred the SG movement.

Just proves that the SG movement is a great thing. Finally getting the glaring problem of public schools addressed. Obviously, more research needs to be done on the bill, but i see this as a possible good start.

I'm waiting on the details but it's a positive that something is happening, IMO.

White says in the link that his bill is not intended to derail the incorporation effort, but if the SG organizers are to be believed the incorporation effort was driven by their desire to control their own schools. If they meant what they said and if this bill truly does provide them with a great deal of autonomy within the EBR system, this just might be the compromise that makes all the stakeholders happy.

I'm wondering if White has some inside information that the petition effort is not going well so he is trying to get ahead of the curve with this bill before it becomes too obvious to everyone that the incorporation won't happen. He might be hoping to still have some leverage to get support from BR legislators (and the CP council) by mentioning the incorporation effort is not the target of this bill but he already knows incorporating SG is a long shot.

I just hope jerkwad Delgado stays quiet for a while.

I can just imagine the reaction when kids from north BR have to be bused to the southeast district and vice-versa.

A compromise proposed by someone who does not stand to gain or lose power from the proposal. How much do you want to bet that there will be opposition from those seeking to retain or gain power?

November, 2012
quote:

East Baton Rouge Parish Superintendent Bernard Taylor on Thursday suggested dividing 36 public schools in Baton Rouge into four attendance regions where students could choose to attend any school in the region.

The plan, in part a response to a push by some to create other, separate community school systems similar to Baker, Zachary and Central, would expand school and educational program choices available to families.

Three regions would be created in north Baton Rouge and one in southeast Baton Rouge, Taylor said.

Taylor names each region by the high schools that serve the larger communities involved: Capitol, Scotlandville, Woodlawn and Glen Oaks.

As Russian said, i see Delgado making up some shite, and the other 2 morons doing something to try and sabotage the effort. Hopefully, i will be pleasantly surprised.

They won't "have to be" bussed. They might choose to be bussed. That's a big difference.

And without knowing the details, you're just making an assumption that kids can even choose to go across town to a different school.

That's like hoping Barbara Norton will have better than 5th grade comprehension skills this session. Not going to happen. Delgado's self-importance won't allow for it.

As I vaguely recall after Taylor held community meetings in the four proposed districts to get feedback, the leaders of the SG school district said his plan wasn't good enough. They wanted full autonomy from the EBRSS.

So before the proposal was to go before the school board in early 2013, Taylor basically said "never mind" and he dropped it.

The main idea was to give the southeast part of the parish a stronger say-so over their schools but the SG people told him 'No thanks. We want all or nothing.'

I'm sure there is more to it than that. Do you have *gulp* a link? I just want to read up on it.

Do I have a link to my "vague recollection"?? No, I don't.

Perhaps you can find one and share it with us.

According to the quote in your post above, student could attend any school in their region. I assume that means that they could pick any school in their region but not another region so the bussing would be minimal compared to the cross-town bussing that occurs now.

ETA: I don't know if the legislation Sen. White is offering follows the 2012 proposal or not.
