Going to a gun show this weekend looking for my first AK. I've read and watched videos on what to look for when buying one (Mag wobble / Gas block canter ect..) but who makes the best? Based on what I read Wasr10s are bottom of the barrel with Arsenals being a little better and Zastavas somewhere between? I'm a total novice when in comes to AKs. TIA

I would look at prices online first. Buy at the gun show only if you can get a better price. Normally gun shows are very high...

Good ole WASR $499

You will find name brands that put them together and clean them up. Some cost more than others.

But a good ole WASR with straight sights, good feel, no cracks in stock, etc, is hard to beat. you can re finish the furniture if you like or replace it with ease if needed.

I'm well aware of prices and what I can get them for online. I want to check the gun show out to see if I can get one cheaper or for the same price without having to pay shipping / FFL fees.

That $499 is the cheapest I've seen though. Thanks

I wouldn't call WASRs bottom of the barrel, there's just a lot of variations in quality with them.

The first thing you need to look at is price. You need to know what you're willing to spend. You can get a hell of an AK for $900, but do you really wanna spend that?

No, not for my first AK I'm willing to spend $650 if there is one out there that's better than the $500 WasRs

I have a Allied Armament AK built in America which uses a Nodak Spud (American made) receiver. I spent $950 on it and love the hell out of that gun. I wouldn't mind spending it again (and I recommend them highly). Centurion makes the 39 Sporter which is an amazing AK as well. I think they can be purchased for around $725. I would go with one if you can find it.

Arsenal and Saiga are top of the line.

If you get a Zasatava M70, make sure its the O-PAP and not the N-PAP. Even though the NPAP accepts double stack mags, the bolt and turrion are made for single stack mags so they jam like a mother. The O-PAP is the newer version that fixed this problem

I have a M&M M-10 and love it. Its middle of the road

Can I offer a one off suggestion? An AK is not a precision weapon. Their purpose is to turn cover into concealment and fire every time. Buy a decent WASR or Zastava, put poly furniture on it and start burning through ammo. If it's fun to shoot and reliable, you've successfully acquired an AK that has fulfilled its potential.

It really is, I don't think you could buy a saiga and convert it yourself for that price right now. I spent a little over $500 on my saiga conversion a few years ago but saigas were cheaper back then.

I got mine even cheaper than that on a group buy.
