My cousin neighbor said we may go out in the gulf on Friday to catch some red snapper. I never been anywhere near offshore so I'm kinda nervous
Any tips or tackle suggestions
Po-boy like me used to cane poles and hand lines
We made quick work of our limit and headed in. Had a blast.
Didn't get sick or anything will def go back.
Podna told me that a "chub" is similar to a goo. I caught a bunch of them. Kept 3 to try them out on the pit

The weather is supposed to be good, hopefully the seas are low for your first trip out. How far y'all going to run?

There are ear patches you can get for sea sickness , not sure if prescription. I never get seasick but some I have fished with do and it ain't fun. Not good going out with a bad hangover either. I have t been out since last June. Had about two ft seas in a 28 footer. No problem. Good luck and enjoy.

Might wanna wear a life jacket at all times!

Might want to get some of those white rubber boots. The slime off the fish can be nasty. Waterproof bibs and jacket as well. Hell watch an episode of Deadliest Catch and dress like them except you won't need layers. You just need the outer shell.

Keep your mind off of the motion of the ocean at all times. If fishing is slow keep a conversation going, watch birds, etc. This will help decrease your odds of sea sickness.
ETA: you will forever be a changed man after this trip especially if ya'll are successful.

You will want something in your belly before leaving but not stuffed
Do whatever it takes to shite before leaving the dock(coffee, cigarette, dip,......)
Bring sunblock even on cloudy days
Have a plan and try to prepare for a worst case scenario
Bring water and food
Know where the life jackets are and ask to be shown how to operate the VHF radio
Ask to be shown the fire extinguisher
Find out where you will be going and let someone know in case they need to look for you

Dramamine anti nausea medicine is available over the counter.
I think the patch you wear behind the ear is scopalamine? Might be worth a visit to the doc.
Drink lots of water and slather on the sunscreen.

Wear waterproof bibs and boots.
quit worrying about getting seasick, you either will or won't.
Have a good time, and get ready for something to pull your arms off when you hook into it.
Drinklots of beer if you like to drink beer.
Its something to enjoy, not have anxiety over.
And frick you for making me jealous; I will be stuck at mardi gras.

A lot of has already been covered but:
Float Plan: find out name of boat, call sign, make of boat and its details, ask where you will be fishing the general area, ask how long you will be out; write it all down and give it to your wife or family me member; give them a specific time you should be back by and a time 3-5 hours later that if you have not called that they should call the other people you are fishing with and then coast guard.
If you don't have a water proof bag then get some xlarge zip locks to put dey clothes and your phone.
Make sure you have the boat owner show you all the safety gear and how to operate the electronics.
Everyone has covered the food, seas sickness sun screen aspects. Get a good night sleep if possible.
Be careful handling the fish, they have sharp scales, fins and of course teeth. Use common sense and be careful
Do not bring Bananas on the boat, its bad luck , so people say.
Take pictures and Have fun!
