They are actually kind of right. While it's not exactly "powerful" the FN 5.7 was in fact actually designed to be able to penetrate body armor.

A good defense attorney, which I'm sure he'll have, will destroy this.

It was reported that he didn't make a statement to police. I'd imagine he's gonna go the route you are suggesting. But the police are going to find out where the guns are registered. Unless they are just registered to him in another state.

no, for the most part around the country you dont register a gun. its just a few select areas

Not in Louisiana and other free states. There is no such thing as registering your gun. You might as well try to register your tennis shoes.
