I'm thinking about buying a 120mm ammo can to mount to my roof rack so I can store tools and such up there. I need it to be removable so I can use the rack for my board though.

Looking to throw a small military shovel, a hatchet, a tow strap, some shackles, a light, a tarp...anyway some gear for an upcoming road trip.

I'd rather this 81mm can, but they are quite a bit more expensive...unless I could find them local. ETA: Actually just found them shipped for $43.56, not sure my shovel will fit though. Much easier access to everything else though.

People use the smaller ones on motorcycles all of the time, they even go as far as removing all of the bracing and the stacking rails. I'd like something easier than 4 U bolts with wing nuts, but that may be answer.

What does the OB think?

Pull the pads and mount up here...might should get two and run them over each seat?

Do you know anybody with some aluminum fab skills?

I would have to think you could have something better than that made for what you want for a reasonable price. That looks like it would be a disaster with straps and stuff in it. You'll have to take everything out to get to the stuff in the back.

Yea, the 120 is way deep, and it will be very difficult to remove it with the 4 nuts to the U bolts way the frick in the back. I may go for the 81mm version. I wish I could mount it, or two of them, without drilling holes in them. I could use them for the range in the bed when I don't need them up on top.

I'm rigging my shite for an epic road trip to the Eastern Sierras. Doing ten days with the family driving every dirt road I can find from Mt. Whitney to Lake Tahoe, I bought a great map that shows them all. I have my truck with legitimate recovery points on both ends and I want to have the recovery gear I need in case shite gets bad (I drive off of the road).

Aren't there boxes made for the roof of vehicles out there?

A damn spam can on the roof of your truck is going to look like mega shite. I'm a trashy function-over-form SOB if there ever was one, but I wouldn't hard mount an ammo can to the roof of my truck.

You gotta draw the line somewhere man. Make something that looks decent.

Are you just trying to look cool, or would you like something that is functional as well as practical?

I'd think You'd have to line them with something. Seems like they'd get beat to hell riding atop your truck full of tools.

I could always paint them black. I really DGAF how it looks, I just want it to be safe and functional.

Those tools bouncing around on top of your head have to be loud...

My first thought is you may get droned by homeland security. Sorry if wrong board but you will attract attention.

I think so too, I still think you'll hear shite banging around up there on any sort of off road bump. Probably not the best for my recovery strap to spend too much time with a hatchet. I think I could cut out some foam though...

Well I was hoping this didn't even need stating.

I think you would be much better off with something purpose-built. It's also going to be a PITA to get anything out of a box on the roof of your truck. There's got to be a better option.

Don't put an ammo can on your roof man.

You would probably be better off with some type of aluminum box. Those cans will eventually turn to rust city.

Something like this

See, I think that would be tough to move around. Getting the damn thing off of my roof loaded with tools needs to be an option. I still think the 81mm is the right choice, I'll have to measure my shovel when I get home though.

I think this thing is perfect...the color isn't even all that bad. Now, one or two?

I would get a hvac guy or metal guy and make a costume aluminum box based of your design. Would not be very expensive.
