I just started a new job and finances are pretty good, so I'm finally in a position to get a rifle. I know shotguns, handguns and some bolt action rifles but I'm totally new to AR style rifles.

First, I'd like to know about the different platforms. Not just AR style platforms but also AK and whatever else there is. I think I'm leaning AK but I'm not sure. I'd appreciate any info on AR vs AK and then AK 74 vs AK 47. I really like the CZ-805 (don't think there's a civilian version yet) but I figure fancy stuff like that is too pricey. I'd prefer to stay under $1,000 and I'm not a huge gear head.

Is the 5.45x39 hard to find? How about the general cost of shooting. If I get a lot of AR votes, I'll just show myself to that big AR thread.

Thanks.

I don't think much 5.45 is made in the states. An executive order from the president could ban the import...

I would start off with a basic AR in 5.56 and decide of that is sufficient or if you want to change things up. AR's are about as easy to change around as LEGOs...

Thanks for the info.

I've heard some talk that most ARs are basically plastic (it's called composite something) and that can be an issue with more basic models. Would you agree with that?

An AR is just lots of fun.

You can get one for $600 these days.

No they all the main components are metal, besides the stock, the grip, etc...

All ARs have a considerable amount of "plastic" but it was designed that way. No need to worry. Make sure your lower is metal and pretty much anything else that can be plastic is fine. Google forward assist. Don't buy anything without it. Not generally needed but it will keep you away from the bottom of the barrel guns for the most part. Smith and Wesson bushmaster and a few others make a decent gun for not much money so you don't break the bank getting into something new.

If you want a fun plinking gun: 5.56

If you want a SHTF zombie gun that shoots well and has real knockdown power: FNAR (.308)

You're welcome.

You should be able to build a pretty nice AR-15/10 for that price. I'll probably buy a mini 30 before building something for myself.

When we talk about building an AR, how many people make the upgrades them themselves vs buy the parts and take it to a gunsmith?

You learn a lot by building yourself. I am guessing people typically buy their first one and build subsequent ones. Most of the first time upgrades are probably sights, buttstock, etc.

There are way too many YouTube videos and guides/comparisons online to not do it yourself

this is just my opinion, get a starter gun, then do a build up

imo a S&W M&P 15 sport is a good starter rifle, and you can get a fairly inexpensive one from here

as far as a build up kit goes, well.. to bad carson is in banland, but there are lot's of other guys on here to point you in the right direction

Excellent title edit.

That being said...go .223 in the AR. Parts are readily available and add ons are plentiful. Plus they're fun as hell.

AR15 is most popular. AK's are cheaper to shoot as far as ammo is concerned.
If you want to mount a scope, etc., AR-15's are easier to work with.

Get an M1 Garand and have a piece of history and a fine SA rifle.
