Will texting ever fade away?

First we had the "zack morris phones" and bag phones. Then beepers/pagers came along. After that, cell phones got smaller and the texting feature was added, but making calls was still more popular. Now we have smart phones and texting seems to be more popular than phone calls. Will texting ever fade into oblivion to be taken over by another technology?

since texting came out in 2001 it has only increased. People like the informality of it. I have customers who text in jobs, and then are weirded out when I call them back. "Oh you couldn't have texted me?"

Snapchat is the new text message.

Clients text me all the time, usually while I'm driving, so I call them and they seem pissy. I'm like wtf, really?!?

Yep, soon people will have computer chips in their brains and can send a thought to other people

"Visual texting" with your Google glasses.

Not for a while, its the only silent way to send message other than email.

There will always be some form of communication other than verbal not sure what it will be in the future though. It is an easy way to deliver a tough message or otherwise hide behind a very mean message

I don't think so. I personally am not a huge fan of talking on the phone so I take advantage of texting whenever I can.

I think it will only accelerate.

exactly.
I don't like to text and drive, and I can call with my bluetooth. Plus texting questions and waiting for answers is hard. If you can't call me, email me. I don't mind texts, but I would rather a call or an email.

Thought messages, or ESP, will be the death of text messages

Ditto. I used to text and drive all the time until I almost flipped my car one day. I have a Bluetooth headset now which makes life a lot easier. I rather just call, makes life a lot easier.

voice activated everything has to be just around the corner. then voxer, or texting with bluetooth will be the thing

Are you kidding me? Of course it will. In 500 years people aren't going to be wasting time typing a msg on the phone. Texting is pretty inefficient
