The first so-called “smart gun” has hit the shelves at U.S. retail outlets, including one of the biggest firearms stores in California, according to the Washington Post.
The Smart System iP1, a .22-caliber pistol made by the German gun-maker Armatix GmbH, can only function with an accompanying wristwatch, which is sold separately.
When the RFID-equipped watch is activated by a PIN number and placed near the gun — like when a shooter grips the handle — it sends a signal to unlock the gun and a light on the back of the weapon turns green, according to the report. Otherwise, the firearm stays locked and the light on the back remains red, it stated.
The pistol sells for $1,399 and the watch retails for another $399 — more than double the cost of .40-caliber Glock handgun, according to the article.

Imagine that...in my current state of residence.

It's just another attempt at the protectionist mentality. You can make a gun "safe."
They will never realize that it's not the gun that is unsafe. It's the person behind the trigger.

too expensive, too complicated, wouldn't trust it

From the Washington Post article about this
Washington Post
Why do people continue to live in places like that? So I guess the clock is ticking now for NJ.

New Jersey passed a hotly contested law in 2002 requiring that only smart guns be sold in the state within three years of a smart gun being sold anywhere in the country.

I'm not opposed to the technology. If there are people out there that want to buy it...by all means, go for it. But I can smell what's coming next....legislation, mandates, infringement.

so is it either or? meaning, can it be shot if you never buy the wristband?
couldn't see myself fumbling to find a wristband when someone is entering my home

"Smart" Gun Control is already a topic of discussion. This on the Fox front page ten minutes ago

thats what i'm wondering
if the gun needs the wristband to shoot, why the hell are they sold separately?
Posted on 2/20/14 at 2:02 pm to Croacka
So someone else could use it on me if they were close enough?
Posted on 2/20/14 at 2:14 pm to h0bnail
So when everyone buys these the government hits the big red button to deactivate everyones "wrist band"
Posted on 2/20/14 at 2:27 pm to DonChowder
Why would you sell the watch separate from the gun?

I would not buy it, for obvious reasons that have already been stated.

Let me get this straight, it's a .22 for $1800?
Yeah, I'm all over that.
Yeah, I'm all over that.

I love the idea behind it. Of course its not practical in every situation but if they made it in a 40, change the watch to something similar to a vehicle lock clicker that i can put in my pocket, and reduce the price I might buy one.
Curious after activated it does it stay active as long as its in range of the watch or until deactivated or is it timed.
Would also be cool to have onstar on a gun. that way if its stolen it can be tracked.
Notice I did not take into consideration big govt tracking my gun, turning it off, etc. Im not paranoid
