Are kids who take Karate more or less likely to get into a fight?

I am thinking about letting my 12 year old son take a martial arts class. The idea is that it would instill discipline. The thought occurred to me how this might led to more fights.

On the one who wouldn't want to use your training? As a member of the military I know we welcome the opportunity to finally use our training. So under this idea he is more likely to fight because he is ready to fight and wants to show his stuff. The idea that they teach you to avoid fights I think is more persuasive to mature adults. Young kids have something to prove.

Along those lines, I think he is more likely to be the target of a fight with those wanting to prove themselves. When I was a kid those kids who took karate where always doing side kicks and showing off their stuff. It was a challenge and a warning to those who were taking notes. What better way to show you are a badass than by beating up a kid who knows karate? It is putting a target on his back.

My son's school focuses a lot on self control, self discipline and leadership. They are primarily taught self defense moves for the first few years.

I think it entirely depends on what kind of kid he is. Is he a Daniel or a Johnny? I took karate and don't recall ever feeling I wanted to show my stuff off at school or anything. I got that out during sparring and tournaments.

You may have a problem with martial arts, but I think you are ok with marshal arts.

Jujutsu is the best answer IMO.

I was in a crappy situation because I wanted to take karate as a kid so I could beat people up, but my parents wouldn't let me because I was so young. I guess they were afraid my bones weren't strong enough or some crap. Then when I got old enough I had lost interest.

Probably get picked on more for taking karate. Usually means he sucks at sports.

probably reading this in the wrong context, but do you mean that's why so many military members act like douchebags in public and want to start fights?

Get THUG LIFE tattooed across his knuckles and you won't have to worry about too many kids messing with him.
