whats the easiest, smartest, best, way to figure out the tongue weight on a boat? I bought the boat second hand and the trailer was bought for the boat 5 years after the boat was made. the original owner had the boat on a lift and the guy i bought it from trailered it.

thanks!!!

See if you can pick it up?

ETA: the tongue weight will be determined by how the boat sits on the trailer. The more forward the boat is on the axle the heavier the tongue weight.

Again it will be solely determined by how the boat sits on the axle. I have a 19ft bay boat that I can easily pick up and move around while on the trailer.

To answer question put boat on trailer. Set scale on grond abd block of wood on scale. Zero scale. Then set tounge of trailer on a block of wood. Make sure the block is tall enough to make trailer level.

Bbvd is correct tounge weight changes based on the boat weight and what is in it (fuel, ice chests) , axle distance from hitch, axle position under the boats center of gravity.

Typically you want 10% tounge weight.

Park boat where you skin deer

Pick up tongue of boat with deer skinning rope and deer scale (assuming you kill deer bigger than the tongue weight of your boat)

Its much easier to use 3 2 x 4's.

One laterally, and 2 vertical.

Put the scale under one vertical, the other one cut it so it just hits the ground.

Tongue is lowered to the center of the horizontal board, which rests on the verticals (an upside down U)

The two boards are much more stable than a single board.

Tongue weight is twice the indicated scale weight.

(you don't need a 300 lb scale this way)

Tongue must be level too.

what i think most people are missing is my tongue weight on that boat is well over 300lbs probably closer to 5 to 600 if not more. the typical scale tricks as much as i appreciate the input are not going to work.

Well in that case you can find a truck stop with a scale. Weigh your truck, and then hook up and weigh it again leaving the wheels of the boat trailer just off the scale.
