Pretty cool article about Paul George. It talks about how in todays game great players pretty much become identified in high school due to the internet and social media. And Paul George wasnt. Hes the 1st guy since Scottie Pippen in 1987 to go from a pretty much unknown player into a super star. Late bloomer not just with his skills, but also physically. Was 6'1 freshman year of high school. Was 6'8 sophomore year of college.

Also goes into his work ethic and mindset. Pretty cool article. Kinda long, but a good read.

quote:

Poll talent evaluators around the league and to a person they agree that George qualifies as the only domestically produced wunderkind to emerge from this much obscurity in at least a quarter of a century.

quote:

George's usage rate of 28.2 has conspicuously climbed to 12th highest in the league, while his PER has risen to 27th overall (20.4). He has scored more points than ever (22.2 a game, 11th highest in the NBA), more efficiently than ever (true shooting percentage: 56.3 percent, up from 53.1 percent last year), while turning the ball over less than ever (12.4 times per 100 plays, better than James and Durant). He ranks second in scoring off screens (1.11 ppp); 11th ?in isolation (0.95); ninth in catch-and-shoot (1.27); and sixth in spot-up possessions (1.29). "Honestly," Zormelo says, "Paul scares me," noting that George's 0.99 overall ppp this season mirrors that of the 23-year-old James (1.00) and the 23-year-old Durant (1.06).

quote:

George has rated first overall in Defensive Win Shares for two straight seasons while ranking in the top 10 in steals per game for three seasons. Meanwhile, among those who play at least 30 minutes a game, he ranks second in opponent field goal percentage at the rim, barely behind Hibbert. "I don't know if I've ever seen anyone Paul's size defend like he does," says Bird, a man hardly prone to hyperbole. "It's unbelievable."

Also pretty cool:
quote:

In an informal poll of 20 league sources -- players, coaches, executives and scouts -- seven respondents declined to name George a superstar. When asked why, each cited George's inexperience. One of those seven dissenters, it's worth noting, was Paul George.

According to the article, Pippens PER + Duncans DWS + LBJ Net Rating = Paul George.

Slow down.

I know everybody wants to crown him, but just slow down. He's been pretty mediocre for the past few months after a great start.

Lebron's a superstar. Durant's a superstar. Paul George isn't in their neighborhood.

Just going off what the article said.

And pretty much everyone in the NBA thinks hes a superstar. And is constantly called the best 2 way player in the NBA, along with LBJ. And a lot of those stats that were in that quote says he is, statistically. And read the last sentence of that quote...

And he has struggled in some games these past few weeks(not months)... but still has been better than "mediocre" over that stretch. And his D has always been elite.

But ok.... sure.

Shooting 36% in February. Shot 41% in January. Is 26th in the league in PER. Behind guys like Nikola Pekovic. Isaiah Thomas, Mike Conley, Andre Drummond, Goran Dragic.

He's basically been the same player he was last year.

And last year in game 7 vs Lebron, "Superstar" vs an actual Superstar, Paul George went 2-9 for 7pts and fouled out trying to guard Lebron.

James put up 32/8/4 against George.

Those guys aren't on the same level

He's a very good player. I just think we've rushed to crown him the next great one.

You hit the nail on the head. George is a really good player and will only get better. But right now it's Lebron and Durant.

Did you even read the article? Just curious. I doubt you did. If you did you wouldnt have said that hes the same player he was last year. Improved all across the board.

And who said anything about him being a super star last year? I didnt. In that article they talk about that game 7 vs Miami.

And I said he has some games where he struggled offensively these past few weeks. And he has. Still an elite defender over that time period though.

Im not saying hes on KD or LBJ level right now. But he is a star in the league. And he is still 23 years old.

Sme of the comments in this thread only serve to remind me how criminally underrated elite defensive players are.

Im with you man.... George has had the top DWS last season and has it this season. And also has been top 10 in steals for the past 3 years. And its not like he guards crappy players and shuts them down... hes going against the other teams best player every night.

So hes arguably the #1 defensive player in the NBA, and a borderline top 10 offensive player in the league... but isnt a star.

And hes still improving.

Yeah sunny I remember that thread. I agreed with you completely and was shocked at what some people thought of Paul George.

How many superstars are there for you? I think Chris Paul is a superstar. I think there is certainly a sizable drop after CP3, but I have no problem calling guys superstars in the next tier like Curry, Love, Harden, George, Melo, etc.

I agree, but his career trajectory seems to be incredible because he is like 23. Already a pretty stud defender (even though LBJ toasted him in the playoffs) and there certainly has been improvement in his game, despite shooting poorly in 2014.

Young Lebron was not exactly the sharp shooter he is today. I am not saying that Paul George will ever be that good, but his shooting percentages will improve. The low percentages are cause he is only 23.

Geezus, the man is shooting almost 44% from the field, which really isn't bad (better than Klay Thompson, for instance). From this thread, it sounds like he is in Ricky Rubio territory.

Seriously.... hes struggled the past few weeks with shooting, but a lot of guys go through weekly slumps throughout the year.

And shooting 37% from 3 which is solid. And his true shooting percentage is 56%

And Lebron isnt a natural shooter. He learned to be a solid shooter. Paul George looks much more comfortable shooting the ball than LBJ did at his age.

I laugh when ESPN keeps trying to sell the myth that LeBron is the best defender (or hell even best perimeter defender) in the league.

It really is sad how they underrated George. If Indianapolis had about 5 million more residents, they'd be saying he's the best player in the league. I hate that they tend to control the narrative in sports because stud players like George never seem to get their due until at least a year after they earned it.

His numbers have dropped since that stripper shite came out, but have picked up since the ASG.
26 and 35

He also doesn't draw a lot of FTs like a guy like Harden does..

Hes shooting 5.5 free throws per game... which is 16th most in the league. And is an 86% free throw shooting.

Hes not as good of an actor as Harden is.... he should be up for an oscar every year.

Man of Steel... agree with all of that. Jeremy Lin should be giving half of his contract to ESPN.

And its not like they just dont show good players or give them any publicity. There are some all stars that never get mentioned.

Because LeBron is the best defender in the league. The guy can guard 1-4 pretty easily and can guard some 5's. A few years ago in a single playoff game he guarded Rondo, Allen, Pierce, Bass, and Garnett and was unreal in doing so. Dude shut down Derrick Rose in 4th quarter of huge ECF game and last year shut down Paul George and lit George up in game 7.

When Lebron wants to, he is the best defender in the league. Not denying that. But he doesnt guard the other teams best offensive player every game like Paul George does.

Thats why LBJ defensive stats / ratings arent as good as Georges. He doesnt do it every night.

his FG% is down to 43%.

That was always my gripe with him.

Lebron is shooting 54 fricking % and Durant is over 50. He's not even in their league. shite he isnt even in CArmelo's league right now.

They wont win shite unless he has an unreal playoff series.

his player efficiency rating is 26th in the league
