Putting this here since the discussion can involve non-Olympic sports.

quote:

Is it inherently bad to have a sport that’s so predictable? It is at least in the case of bobsled, considering that it features four anonymous helmets poking out of identical sleds, with no particular strategy discernible to the naked eye. Given those parameters, you’d think suspense would be the only reason to watch. Since there’s absolutely no suspense to be had, you’d be better off switching to Animal Planet whenever you see a bobsled charging across your television screen.

Did you read the article?

quote:

for all four-man, two-man, and two-woman bobsled competitions, the team ahead after the third run has won 100 percent of the time. The fourth run of an international bobsled competition, then, is the most meaningless event in all of sports

I just watched the US get bronze by .03 seconds the other night. It was right down to the wire. So that pretty much destroys that point. It wasnt for gold, but it was for a medal so the point remains.

Yeah I thought there were some holes in the argument. I would rather if he went into more detail about what these guys are actually doing to go faster. I think that's more of the point - I'm watching this thing fly down the tube while the time ticks up. No clue about strategy or technique or anything else.

I think all of the half-pipe stuff is the most boring sport ever.

Okay, some guys do some flips and shite and they are judged on it.

If you've seen it once you've seen it a million times.

Yeah every routine looks basically the same to me too. I have zero idea how they determine one is better than the other.

I agree with the halfpipe and bobsled talk about the lack of suspense and strategy etc. It's funny because figure skating can be pretty entertaining to just about any viewer. I wish they would go into more detail about how they are judged because evidently even little things such as the outfits they were can make or break a performance, which is comical to me, but at least there is another challenge presented there

I've thought this about the bobsled for a long time.

Heck the race becomes boring about 1/3 of the way down the run because if you are .15 seconds behind you almost never catch up.

I think bobsled is pretty spectacular. Maybe they can build super-wide course and race head to head or something.

This...and it's even lamer that they get seriously judged on it.

X Games - judging on who is more rad and killer doesn't belong in the Olympics.

I don't follow. Most of the winter games are/were extreme sports. Ski jumping and alpine skiing were pretty extreme sports back in the day. Luge and skeleton, and ski aerials... all extreme. It's just progression.

And to dog those athletes.... come on. That shite is difficult, no matter how "boring" it looks.

Or even a course with side by side runs. Head to head best of 3 and move on to the next round.

I'd watch the hell out of that.

That is why none of them are better than Snowboard cross. That is some great stuff. If you fall your out. You can make moves and push people down.

That snowboard cross is my favorite of the new events. The prelims and the final were all awesome.

Except that short track speed skating. That's great stuff too.

I may be biased, having been born and raised in the south where there is no opportunity to watch any of these sports live or participate yourself. But I agree

all THIS stuff is the most boring sport ever

Fixed the original.

A poster above said everyone can related to the figure skating, but IMO

I was trying to watch the ski jumping earlier in the week. Trying to psych myself out, I thought, this is similar to the vault in gymnastics, right? I'm not a big gymnastics fan, but I've watch the summer olympics vault competition before without slipping into a coma. But that ski jumping--

Can't wait for this round of the olympics to be over.

You clearly failed to watch Cool Runnings back in the day.
