I have a standing water problem under the house because of the way my lot drains & it seems i need to install a sump pump to keep the water out. My basic understanding of how to do it is this:
-dig a hole 6-8" larger than the sump pit
-fill bottom 6" of hole with gravel
-put in sump pit
-fill remainder of hole with gravel
-put a few inches of gravel in the sump pit itself
-put in sump pump, wire up to GFCI
-install hose or pipe for water to pump out of (direct this into the yard or toward a drain or something)
anything else? seems really simple but these things are always a pain in the arse, especially if you've never done it before.

That should work. You may want to pick out your pump first to make sure you'll have enough room for the float to work properly. Good luck!!

Why not go to HD hire some day laborers, get a load of sand on put it under the house. Also, there are compnaies that pump sand under houses, not cheap though. It is better than a sump pump. Also, a bith if you have to crawl under the house if the blocks are 1 ft or less.

The water under the house is going to increase settlement of the home. Do you have gutters? I would first look at trying to keep the water from getting under the home...

This is the first thing you need to address. - where is the water coming from?
As for the pump, your pretty much dead on with how to install one.

Just dig a trench to the ditch and ensure that the invert is at a lower grade than the lowest elevation under the house. The water will drain out the ditch.
You can even lay pvc and "culvert" the trench as well.

Had this issue a while back in my storage room off the basement/garage. I got some of that sealant paint for masonry. It seems to have slowed the problem. Now it only has a little leak when there is a huge rain storm. Talking with my neighbor a few months ago, he mentioned having his work crew come dig the area out around the porch (this storage room is under my concrete porck) and putting some tar on the foundation walls. It would help to block the water from getting in, but the sump pump would be a good idea as a little insurance. Or a french drain. I weighed all my options and went with the sealant for now. Maybe one day I'll attack it from the outside.
