After doing some crappy sup-optimal research I've noticed that the MLS lacks a developmental league so far as I can tell.

the international soccer game relies on non-amateur things such as try outs and is totally incompatible with the NCAA's puritanical obsession with amateurism.

Will US soccer move towards a developmental league or will it shift to accommodate the puritanical NCAA and potentially hurt american talent?

That's what we hope for.

I just see the NCAA's obsession with amateurism being a huge shackle around american talent who will be bared from try-outs and other things talent in other countries will enjoy.

We would be worse off without the NCAA, so no.

I'm hoping that both the NCAA and the burgeoning academy system can produce quality players for us in the future.

I do agree with you here. We need that outlet right now, unfortunately. And since there is no magic switch, we'll need it for some time in the future.

In the long run, I hope that MLS has full blown Euro style academies, and that guys playing in the NASL or third tier or wherever can make enough of a living so that going all in on soccer is legitimate career decision for a decent number of youngsters each year, ala baseball. The NCAA will then be unnecessary to our soccer future, but still exist for fun with maybe a small bit of quartz or copper in the rough every once in awhile.

College soccer can only help. Whether elite players should play in college is another issue.

Title IX is the issue. If we could field more collegiate soccer teams I think it would increase the popularity of HS soccer in America. Then college soccer could be used like college basketball/baseball. Really good players could just go to the draft and others could continue to develop in college.

But because we killed all of the men's soccer clubs to satisfy Title IX ...

That's not really the main issue. The main issue is that players need to be training year round in a team setting to really reach their potential. NCAA laws don't even come close to allowing this.

Why? You have the full fall regular season and then spring training and scrimages and year round strength and conditioning access. Let MLS develop a summer league like the Cape in baseball.

Coaches are limited to 20 contact hours a week.

The problems with youth development begin long before college soccer, but the NCAA perpetuates it to a degree. College soccer can continue to exist but we must rely on the academy system to produce higher quality players. The NCAA can be for those players who fall through the cracks.

That's not even close to bring enough in soccer.

WC 2014 USMNT

Likely Starters:
Clint Dempsey
Geoff Cameron
Omar Gonzalez
Matt Besler
Graham Zusi

Likely on the Squad:
Michael Parkhurst
Alejandro Bedoya
Brad Guzan
Nick Rimando

Possibly on the Squad:
Clarence Goodson
Benny Feilhaber
Brad Evans
Joe Corona
Brad Davis
Eric Lichaj
Sacha Kljestan
Chris Wondolowski
Tim Ream
Stewart Holden
Gooch
Maurice Edu

These people played college soccer because there was no better setup through which they could develop their talent and make themselves known to scouts.

We would be worse off without the NCAA, because the NCAA has helped pick up the slack. It's obviously not ideal for developing talent, but to deny that it has really helped us out is to just ignore the facts.

I feel like the NCAA system certainly isn't a good one, yet it's kind of all that we have right now. This country is massive and has lots of materials and time being placed in other areas (i.e. baseball, basketball, football). I feel it'll be difficult setting up developmental leagues with such a big country with such a young league in the MLS.

I would however like to see the MLS start creating/implementing a plan (not sure if they already have one and I just haven't heard of it) of where they want to go. A plan that address the NCAA, academies, developmental leagues and ways to develop talent. Klinsi has done a great job, from what I hear, getting the ball rolling but it will need time and dedication from everyone for it to work.

THIS.

I would say that an development league system is a necessity for the serious soccer talent in the USA who would prefer such a system.
Some people prefer the collegiate system and that is fine, but there should be another option.

I'm imagining something similar-ish to baseball and the ncaa. Sometimes good talent goes to college and ends up in the pros, but if you are really serious you can get signed right out of high school.
