Giving up on shows

At what point do you just cut bait on a show you've watched for years? I'm really close with the Walking Dead, I just don't care about Rick or Carl or anyone on this show anymore...well I might still care about Maggie. I honestly care more about the characters in the episodic Walking Dead game than the characters on the show. If this wasn't the last season of Sons of Anarchy I think I'd be done with that as well.
So when you've watched something for a few seasons do you give it more time to right the ship or do you easily wall away?

I've watched all of True Blood and I'm out. Don't even care what happens in the last season.

I pretty much drop things if they are no longer entertaining overall. Unless I wind up watching them while doing something else like I do with True Blood. Just kinda half arse watch that show while playing a video game or browsing most of the time and get decent entertainment while skipping the crappy parts.
I quit watching Walking Dead after season 3. I had stopped watching during the beginning of season 2, but came back for season 3 because I figured there was no way they could screw up the prison arc from the graphic novels and make it suck. I was wrong.

Then you didn't watch the full prison arc which just ended.

When the show loses the essence of what made it great to begin with. Usually happens when a show reaches it's "peak" of success, then is followed by over-production and lack of creativity.

Basically when Grissom left CSI.
Its funny the pattern with the CBS Post CSI police procedural. They air one it builds 5/6 seasons starts falling, they air a new one.
But in reality they are the same crimes over and over
CSI - Sex and Gambling Crimes
CSI Miami - Drugs
CSI New York - Terrorism
NCIS - Terrorism/Military Crimes
NCIS LA - Terrorism/Military crimes in LA? (haven't seen it)
NCIS NOLA - Maybe Sex Gambling Drugs and Terrorism?

I usually cut ties if I lose interest, or if it's sure to be canceled. A prime example of this for me would be Raising Hope, which fulfills both those qualifications.

If it gets ridiculous and I can tell the network is intentionally trying to stretch the plot out do that they can have more episodes then I cut bait. I stopped watching Lost at 4 seasons and Heroes at 3.
I can see that The Walking Dead is close to being next. The network hit on a goldmine and they are going to mine it clean. There are so many damn commercials and you can tell they are stretching the story to try and get a few extra seasons. It just seems like the story is not advancing at the pace it started with.

I often lose interest in keeping up with a show week by week and I usually just end up binge watching it later.

Gave up on the Walking Dead, Hell on Wheels and V, after seasons 1 for them all. Take too long a hiatus between seasons and the interest is just gone for me.

I have up on Newsroom after Season 2 Ep 1. I gave up on Walking Dead last season but caught back up on DVR moths later and now in excited again.

I can remember giving up on nip/tuck during the tv show season, the 4th or 5th and Greys Anatomy during the second. Although the ex moving out may have helped me dump Grey's since she wasn't here but Izzie struggling to save a deer in the back of a pickup feels like the breaking point.

It's pretty easy for me to quit shows. I quit Greys anatomy, all the CSIs, and Desperate Housewives. I'd probably quit BBT if I didn't watch it
With the wife and kids. At some point you just can't stand the characters or story lines anymore.

Last week I decided to discontinue The Walking Dead. It's boring, they're dragging it out and the acting just keeps getting worse.

Depends on what you are looking for? Most shows people fall in love with because it is something new and it is nice to see a new type of show. I mean I am seeing the Walking Dead and American Horror Story, two shows completely different than most shows on television. So it is something new and exciting. But people also want action, action, action with these types of shows which is not as realistic from a production side of things. They have to incorporate story to some degree. Have to build new characters to kill characters. So if you are saying they are stretching it out, you are right because if they kill characters every week there is no show. I have not really heard anyone who liked American Horror Story beyond season 1. A lot only liked the Walking Dead season 1 but many are saying they really like season 2.
As for the other shows I have no idea how Grey's Anatomy is still on but honestly almost all network television sucks because they have limits. Cable and premium channels are taking over the television scene. Networks best chance right now is the Blacklist but if you sit back and think about it that show has been done many times before.

When the show loses its focus and identity.

More time sure. But not an eternity.
