You sure the laptop end is USB and not HDMI or one of the mini HDMIs?

And I bought a cord for my tablet to TV for maybe $6. Don't over think it.

if your laptop doesn't have hdmi output, it surely has a vga output. your tv probably also has a vga input.

you can get an active usb to hdmi converter--it's basically an external video card, but i don't have experience with any of those.

You can also steam from any smartphone. I watch LSU basketball team embarrass themselves last night streaming from my iPhone with a lightning-to-HDMI cable I got from amazon for $40. And I've seen them cheaper at walmart since then. Also micro USB-to-HDMI for android phones.

yeah seems like i need to inspect the "ports" on my laptop a little more rather than just assuming that i have to use only the USB

This. Audio is another matter. You'll need a mini plug to male RCA adapter.

There has to be some sort of "video out" on your computer.
