I have watched this team from day 1. They are talented enough to be a tourney team. The glaring weakness at this point is a fundamental understanding of the game, especially on defense. Defending ball screens, allowing excessive penetration, and lack of understanding how defend as a team is disappointing. I dont want to blame coaching but have a hard time understanding how this team gives up a ton of points against offensively challenged short buses like aTm, UGA, and Alabama. I have seen all three of these teams play against other SEC opponents and look virtually helpless on offense.

Last night with 10 minutes to go in the second half against ole miss, I didnt see how alabama would even score again for the rest of the game. Then I remembered how potent they looked against us. It is baffling to me at this point. I'm with this team till the end and will support them no matter what. The NIT is looking like the reality at this point (but not a lock either) and that is truly sad.

I know things have changed, but we do all realize that two and three years ago we would have all given our first borns basically to even sniff the NIT right?

. Nope. I love my kids way more than the nit! in reality at this rate the nit is not a given. This team really sucks right now and could lose to everyone left on the schedule very easily.

You're an idiot. We won't lose any home games. The nit is all but a lock. There isn't that much time left in the season, we are in the tourney now, so we will be in the nit when it's done.

Hope 9-9 in the league play gets it done. It didn't last year... This team is a huge disappointment.

I'm a long time season ticket holder. Very disappointed.

Last year's team played better than this year's team, with less talent, and exceeded expectations. This team hasn't come close to meeting expectations.

What kills me is that it's all about defense. And defense simply comes down to hustle and heart. These guys evidently have little.

Three years ago we didn't have this amount of talent. We went out and got a new coach (not my first choice but that's another rant) who can get the talent but the question remains; can he "coach"? Say what you want but Brady teams (not a fan) always played defense. We have no reliable shooters and rely on too much one on one break downs. Until we learn how to break down zone defenses and switch on ball screens, the amount of talent we have (get) will not matter. Good fundamentals will always win out.

Huge disappointment is the right call. I do recall ESPN before the season started that LSU was one of the teams to watch. We had a top ten recruiting class plus key returning players.

What I see is a two-fold problem: 1)another re-building year (now almost a given at LSU), and 2)resultant inconsistency in levels of play by players (a JJ coached team characteristic?). So we see LSU beat UK and lose to aTm and squander its best shot at the NCAAs.

That UK win was fools gold. LSU is a middle of the road sec team who, with some breaks/luck, will slip into the NIT. Once you accept them for what they are, it is much easier to handle defeat.

I agree with all of the above quotes. So disheartening to watch this season. Worse, a major flag has been risen. This team is more talented than most of the teams we have lost to. A&M, UGA, Bama, Rhode Island, and others. There is no excuse for losing that many games to teams with less talent. I know that we have more great recruits on the way, but what difference will it make? We will need an uber-talented team to make the NCAA Tourny, because we will have to rely on our talent. In the tournament we can expect early exits because as we have seen this year, we aren't able to adjust in-game and make coaching decisions to help our team slow down the other teams momentum. We continue to sit players for large parts of the first half based on the concept of staying out of foul trouble, but all we do is dig a hole for ourselves that we can't climb out of. Johnny Jones is not a rookie coach. He's been a head coach for a long time now. Basically, we can only hope that we get not top ten recruiting classes, but top 5 recruiting classes.

This is simply a flawed team that doesn't play with consistent effort.

It starts with JOB. When he plays like he's capable this is a tourney team. But, he has a problem with "stupid" fouls that take him out of the game. He also is the main culprit of playing with uneven effort.

Hickey really is the reflection of this team. When he's good, he's real good. When he's bad, this team struggles. Most disappointing is his defense. He consistently gets beat by quicker guards.

Stringer is a gunner. But, when his shot isn't falling, this team is in trouble. He's one of the few outside scorers we have. While he plays hard, he's a defensive liability because bigger guards abuse him.

Mickey is a great freshman. His blocks bail him out of alot of bad defense. He will continue to grow and should only get better with experience.

Martin is an enigma to me. Kid has a ton of talent. But, sure plays "soft". I think expectations were simply too much for this kid early. Still that's no excuse for a lack of effort at times.

Coleman has been really good for this team. He's far from a superstar, but he gives this team a solid vet.

TQ looks like, well a freshman. But, this team really needs more from him.

Coaching still remains a mystery. But, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. For whatever reason, this team just hasn't played together well as a team defensively. But, getting outrebounded isn't coaching. It's effort. No excuse for this team to get outrebounded by a&m.

I still think Gray and Hornsby will make a huge difference next year over what we have.

That's what happens when you let Temple dictate who you hire. Jones may be able to recruit but he is not a good coach.

A hidden fact is that Coleman has been foul trouble both at UGA and A&M with JOB. LSU misses his defense on the floor as much as O'Bryant's. I just don't understand how Hickey and Stringer allow the opponents to drive to the goal at will. I gave them an excuse at Georgia because of the fouls being called, but last night was ridiculous. They don't even try to get in front of the ball handler. Hickey just goes for steals and gets beat off the dribble far too much, and I don't know what Stringer is doing. When Coleman is on the floor, our defense is much better.

This thread really sums up all of our woes this season. It is very reassuring that some fans actually understand the sport and still give a rats arse. I as well have had season tickets in the family as long as I can remember and will stick with this team till the end. Imo we have vastly underperformed this season considering our talent level. I am basing this on how we did last season compared to the amount of talent/player maturation we have this year. Yes Carmouche was quite a loss and no one has really stepped up to fill the gap but you would have thought we would have figured it out by now.

The alarming part to me is
1) Lack of Fundamentals
2) In game adjustments
3) Timeout Management (and what we draw up during timeouts)
4) The unmotivated and lackadaisical road game performances
5) Basic defensive skills we lack

All of these things are basic fundamentals of coaching and player performance but this is the kind of crap that kills us. I am really hoping this is not a coaching issue but it is becoming very clear that some of these issues are solely on the shoulders of Johnny Jones. Believe me I want to believe we made the right call but am starting to really question if we did. Wouldn't you think JJ would have done something different to get the team ready to perform on the road after the exact same thing happens over and over (Bama, Uga, A&M)?

Anyways, I love LSU basketball and always will but it has just become painful to watch us waste our opportunities time and time again. The way we performed on the road is nothing short of excruciating for the die hard fans. If the NIT is all thats in the cards this year then I will without a doubt, possibly even sadly enough, support our ailing team to the end

So i guess
