OK, Hank fools Walt into thinking that Jesse has found Walt's money out in the desert. Jesse tells Walt that the van he rented had GPS installed which it did not. Hank & Co. discover from Saul's henchman where Walt rented the van and the type of barrel's he used to stash his cash. They make up a mock barrel with cash and take a picture of it and send it to Walt's cell phone.

While this was obviously a smart series of police tactics, my huge problem with this scenario is that if I was in Walt's position and was moving 80 million in cash:
1. I absolutely would not trust Saul's flunkies to go pick up the cash at the storage facility.
2. I would make damn sure the van I was renting didn't have any type of tracking device.
3. As such, Hank's scheme would have never worked.

Other than that, I thought the series as a whole and the finale' in particular were incredible; some of the best TV ever.

I'm pretty sure at this point in Walt's life he has become drunk with power, so much so that he has developed an amount of arrogance. A quality that often causes lapses in judgement that would not happen to a weaker individual who is constantly worried about his outcome.

My only issue is....how did they know he buried it so shallow?

And how did they have that much cash on hand to even fake having a barrel full of cash?

They were scared to death of him. They wouldn't think of crossing him.

Walt is pretty meticulous, but he does make mistakes sometimes.

This makes sense to some extent but really the only way I can rationalize is that Walt's physical health got so bad that he had to rely on others to help him. Digging that huge hole for all those barrels darn near killed him. As such I can half way get past letting Saul's thugs load the van for him but I have a lot harder time with the GPS issue.

Reasonable question but considering the task of burying 6 of those barrels and Walt's health, you had to figure they would not be too deep. To me the bigger question is how did they guess the barrels were buried upright instead of laying on their sides? I guess they figured anyone would bury them upright to allow easier access to get some cash out later and then re-bury them. Still, considering the huge task at hand and Walt's failing health, it would have likely been easier to bury them laying down on their sides since you would not have to dig the hole as deep.

Another good question but you can only conclude that either:
1. they got enough cash from Jesse to at least cover the top of the barrel to make it look like it was full or
2. the DEA had cash on hand from previous drug busts.

Still, Hank was obviously not sharing the stake-out with the DEA office so it is somewhat of a hole in the plot requiring the viewer to fill in the blanks.

Yea, I can buy that.

Yea, and there was a pattern of rookie mistakes throughout the series which was consistent with Walt's inexperience with the drug business. Still, you would not expect an oversight managing your life savings.

Yea, but I did wonder if he threw all of it out and also the cops probably recovered some of it. I guess I just struggle a lot less with the cops coming up with a enough cash to cover the top of a barrel than the huge oversight of Walt not insuring that the van did not have GPS. But all things consider it's not that much of a plot discrepancy to tarnish what was a great series.

I got the impression they stole some of the money. I forget the details, but I remember Walt saying something (like "I trust you" or "it looks like it's all there"). Bill Burr and the other guy then exchanged a "whew" look like they had jacked a little of the money.

Only the top of the Barrel would need to be showing cash. You could fill all the way up to the top with pillows and then stack cash on top.

Jesse had gotten a bag of cash from Saul to leave town but changed his mind to burn Walt's house down. So he did have that bag of cash to use in the pic. As for the GPS, well, Walt screwed up. He was rushing and wasn't thinking clearly.

Good observation.

I rewatched the scene and though the situation didn't seem really rushed, your explanation is about as good as any. Neither Saul nor Walt brought up anything about checking the van for bugs/tracking devices and Walt obviously didn't consider that a rental might have GPS. I guess you just chalk it up to even smart criminals don't think of everything. But I still say if it had been MY 80 million, I would have an extensive plan and checklist of things to verify and to make sure there was no way I could be followed. And again, there's no way I would have trusted Saul's flunkies to move my 80 million. Hell with that much money to work with, I would have bought a new van in a different city just for that purpose along with some type of power digging device. If I was sick with cancer, I damn sure wouldn't just take a shovel to dig a whole that big.
