I know how to put computers together and all but I'm no expert on tweaking, and this seems like a weird issue for me.

Basically, I'm playing Tera. I've got the graphic options maxed out at 1080p Oobviously I can turn them down, but I don't think I should need to. I have a Radeon R9 270. In town I'm seeing 5-12 FPS.. But it doesn't look like my video card's working too hard.. seems odd to me. Can someone shed some light? Is this normal? Is there a setting that's messing it up somewhere? What's going on? Nothing else is bottlenecking as far as I can tell. The spikes in the CPU were when I was alt-tabbing back and forth.

On top of this, in League my FPS bounces around like crazy. 70 one second, 30 the next, 60 the next, 10 the next. I downloaded the latest drivers and the issues persist.

A quick google tells me what I already suspected: poor optimization. Just not coded well to handle every combination of hardware.

On top of that, I see it's a game that only takes advantage of two threads, so whatever AMD processor you're running is holding you back because AMD CPUs are just not known for their performance/thread. As an MMO, you are dealing with multiple, highly dynamic models rendered on your screen, a combination that will take advantage of as much CPU power as the game code will allow.

Also, your GPU is on the slightly lower end of mid-range, but I'm guessing that's only a small part of the problem when it comes to this particular game.

So, what you're going to have to do is start with one graphic setting at a time. Turn it down a notch, see what your FPS does. Then down another notch, and test. Another notch, and so on. Then bring that setting back to where you had it, and move on to the next setting. The goal is to see which setting is affecting your framerate the most. I don't know what the settings options in Tera look like, but I would start with any settings related to anti-aliasing, followed by shadows, texture filtering, and kind of lighting effects, anisotropic filtering, etc. A 270 is probably going to need anti-aliasing turned off at a minimum.

Regarding your GPU usage showing 20%, I suspect that you alt-tabbed out of the game to get that screenshot, right? Your GPU will respond to what is happening on the screen and will ramp down if it doesn't have to render objects in game. You would need to monitor your GPU usage in-game, by using a program like MSI Afterburner with Riva tuner.

Your next step is start googling for Tera FPS fixes and optimizations. You'll find some of the same things I just read on forums about poor coding, but there are also several guides to help you tweak settings, edit cofig files and such.

You were the man I was hoping to attract an answer from.

Thank you.

and I have been watching my activity meter (2 monitors) while i'm in game and it doesn't go up very much either.

Nevermind it does. It jumps around a lot.
