are they all all day long, or are there shorter ones that experienced shooters can take? ( I know it's probably mandatory but I'm holding out hope)

Any recommendations for a class?

Just do the all day class and get it over with. From what I've heard it isn't bad.

I have heard nothing but great things about the poster "Dawg23" here on this site. He teaches the course in the BR area I believe.

The all day class really wasn't bad, it was very informative. I was out at 5 that afternoon. We had a few people come in for their refresher class, they just stayed for a couple of hours.

ETA: I took my class at Precision in BR

Mine was 8am until lunchtime IIRC. We got all of the fingerprint and photo stuff done, and went and shot after lunch

If you ever end up having to shoot someone, this is the kind of class that will have you (and the instructor) in serious trouble.

Louisiana statutes (and LSP rules) require a person's first class to be 9 hours long.

Louisiana statutes and rules are a little vague on renewal classes -- but LSP recommended a couple of years ago that all instructors make their renewal classes 9 hours. Most do -- some do not.

Ours was 4-5 hrs for two evenings at the indoor range in Alexandria. Have to get your own photo and prints but thats easy to do.

ETA: they offer an all day saturday class as well.

I took my class with Gordon, and his is all day, 8 to 5. The renewals came in after lunch, shot and stayed until 5 p.m.

If it was that serious, don't you think the test might be a little harder? It literally took me four minutes. All common sense stuff, and frankly just as easy as the hunter safety test

I don't have any land to shoot on so it makes it difficult.

And I don't feel like bringing a full class into Precision. We'd be there all damn day.

Just for the shooting portion, you'd have to have two days.

The live-fire shooting exercise (which I don't consider to be a "test") was mandated by the politicians who served at that time in the state legislature. I can't explain or justify the actions of politicians.

Written tests are not required by law, nor by any rule or regulation that has been promulgated by LSP.

If you don't consider the training one might choose to take prior to carrying in public to be an important or serious matter, I really don't know how to respond.

I've yet to meet anyone who was "over-trained." I do know a lot of folks, myself included, whom I consider to be under-trained.

I know you didn't ask, but I'll offer some advice:

1. Everyone should seek out as much training as they can find and//or afford. I'm talking about training in addition to a CCW class.

2. No one (student or instructor) should cut corners in a CCW class.

3. If I chose to cut corners in selecting or attending a CCW class, and if I then chose to post about it on an internet forum, I'd erase my posts.

Not trying to be an a-hole but if you're waiting for a free one I doubt you'll do anything with it cause the course is the cheapest part.

Too many inexperienced shooters that I can't account for. And they only have so many lanes.

Oh and I can't bring my steel there anymore so I don't really have a reason to go. I hate shooting paper.

Point being, the class was neither hard nor informative to me. I didn't need it to be long, and really thought it was just semantics

I personally think that first time owners should go through much more training than they do before they can carry. Some people are irresponsible, stupid, or don't have the knowledge. I know a few of those people, and am sure you have come across many of them. I don't see classroom training as having much of any benefit at all. No matter how many hours someone sits in a class, nothing will prepare them for real world scenarios

I see it as, even if you spend 100hrs in the classroom, you still won't know what you are doing. This stuff should be instinctive, and it won't be if you are taking notes for that 100hrs

I agree as long as it is not mandatory by some higher entity.
