Who Makes the Best Gas Water Heater for Residence?

The gas water heater in my new house is over 20 years old. It still works fine but I'm going to replace now before it fails.
I figured I'd pick up a Rheem or Ruud but I've been having a lot of people tell me to get a Bradford White. I've never heard of this company, but apparently it's located in Michigan and the water heaters are all US made.
Anyone have any opinions on one brand over another. I'm not going tankless. Not worth it for me right now.
Also, what's a ballpark on installation by a professional plumber? $600-$700? I'm assuming heater will be around $600-$700 as well?

I was told that the ones you get now aren't near as good as the older ones. It could be BS, but this came from someone at a legit company.

I had the 2 37 year old Rheem gas water heaters, which still worked fine, removed last year and replaced with one 12gpm gas tankless. I absolutely love the tankless, but if I were to go back to a tank type, I guess it would be Rheem. I think anything that isn't from THD or Lowe's would be fine.

Yeah, unless you want to go tankless like that other poster it makes no sense. Hot water heaters can last a long time.

It's from like 1992. I'm just paranoid that it's going to bust and flood the house. I was told by the home inspector that it's on its last legs. I figured I'd be proactive and replace before it breaks. It's a relatively inexpensive improvement. I've got one quote at around $1200 for new 40gal Bradford White heater and installation. Is that high or pretty fair?

That seems a little high. The ruud and rheem are exact units and very good. The best on the market is a STATE. They are sold at plumbing contractor stores such as coburns. They are pricey but built to last.

Water heater is about $600 for that brand no frills. $600 labor is high. Ask the guy to break it down in labor and material. He could be pricing one with longer warranty or high efficiency.

ETA..... is it in your attic? May drive the price up slightly but anyone with a little mechanical know how can swap that out. I would say $1,200 is high. He's probably selling the heater for more too. I also think youbhave to have a licensed plumber do your install for the warranty to the effective.

It's in an elevated closet (built just to house water heater) in the garage which is attached to the house. It vents through the attic though. I do think some work on getting that part to current code may be needed, which could explain the higher estimate. I'm going to get several more though.

I have 2 Rheem 60 gallon (gas) - absolutely no issues but my house is only 5 years old.

Its true they dont last 20-40 years anymore.
State water heaters are AO smith, made in the us.
Rheem/Ruud another great heater.
Stay away from hardware store water heaters, they have thinner tanks and have unreliable welds. Expect 3-7 years from this cheap garbage. Typical cheap hardware store quality selection for plumbing fixtures.

I replaced mine last weekend. $450 for a rheem 50gal at Home Depot. $250 to the plumber. Woulda been cheaper but it was Saturday so he was paying his 2 guys time and a half.
If it's that old, might as we'll replace it if it can flood your house. If it cant flood, I'd let it go.
